The lines on them are spaced at 1/4 inch intervals.

I line up the edge of my presser foot on one of the lines and then - if the needle position is movable, I line it up either on the "next" line - or as close to it as possible.

If the needle position is "fixed" - then I lower the needle and see where it "hits" - and then adjust how I line up the fabric with the edge of the presser foot.

Then I sew for a couple of inches on the card to see if I like how my stitching is lining up.

Perfect idea!

I keep a sample stitching on an index card right by the machine. Easy to check settings for 1/4 inch and go!

It also has my settings for stitching on bindings.

I keep them around the sewing machine for that reason too. Also you can use the lines for a quick easy way to mark a stop sewing dot when doing y seams—works great. And because they’re flexible you can also pin your binding strips together at right angle, then lay the card over to mark diagonal—works better than a ruler for me.
