3-D Leaves

I was putting up my summer hanger and thought others may want to see an easy way to do 3-D leaves. It is just a little different look for a change.

Choose a leaf fabric and lay your piece of fabric on top of a larger background fabric square. Sew any kind of a outward curve the size you want, with right sides facing each other. I used blue thread do you can see my curve. After sewing the curve, start pulling the leaf fabric back creating little pleats until you get a nice curve on the leaf. Secure with pins and sew across.

I usually just pin the pleats and place the second piece of background fabric on top and sew the seam but in this tutorial I did it in two steps so you could see it. Here is the picture of the background fabric on top, sewn and trimmed to 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Trim the background fabric the size and shape you want to fit into your patchwork. Here is a picture of it beside the original.

3 dimension always adds interest to blocks. Thank you

Tartan, great tut. Your step by step method is wonderful for us visual learners.

Thanks for the pics.....great way to add a bit of interest....

I didn't understand the first picture until I looked at them all and went back to look at the first one again. The print hides the folds, but I'm sure you can see it better in person. The second print shows up well.
Excellent idea. Great tute. |

I know this is about the 3-D leaves which I really like, thanks for sharing. Do you know where I can find the pattern for the flower? I am a Sunflower lover would love to make this block.
|
I made the pattern up from a folded piece of paper. I wanted the look of a Dresden Plate but with the pointed ends but without the hole in the center. I folded a square of paper in half, then quarters and then again? to form the petal sizes. I cut one section out and added seam allowances to it. The pointed end Dresden Plate is made by cutting the ends of the petal straight and then folding them in half and sew across the end. You can just use a pointed end Dresden Plate for the sunflower and appliqué a yellow center if you don't want to make your own.

Great tute! You come up with some really good ideas.

Thank you Tartan, I am going to use this.
