Angelia, thanks for posting this tute. I recently raided my light strings for a Bonnie Hunter quilt and realized how many dark strings I have. This is perfect for an upcoming retreat and I can get it prepped.

zennia 06-30-2018 08:01 AM

I was lucky yesterday. I went to an estate sale and got two garbage size bags of strings for $3.00. Now i am sorting lights/darks and ironing. After lunch i can start sewing, can't wait.
I was thinking wouldn't this be a fun project for a small group. Everyone bring their scraps and machines and sew all day. What a nice variety we woud get. Angelia, thank You.

Thank You I am making a quilt using solid blocks and didn't know how to make it with strings.

AngeliaNR 07-01-2018 06:39 AM

You are welcome--I'm excited that so many quilters are interested in trying this!

ninab 07-10-2018 09:23 AM

Thank you for the great instructions and photos to support! Love the quilt! I'm gathering (already!) quite the assortment of scraps and leftover 5" squares... I've been wondering what to do with them - now I know! LOL

honeybee1001 10-02-2018 06:37 PM

Thank you for the tutorial, love it!

Ditter43 11-18-2018 12:07 PM

It is an equilateral triangle so it would be 60 degrees.

GingerK 11-18-2018 03:15 PM

This baby ended up being king sized!!

She's finished and ready to be quilted!! I made the mistake of laying the partially completed top on our bed and fell in love!! We really don't need another quilt but I can't let this one go! Thank you so much for the wonderful tute! I used ultra light weight fusible interfacing for the foundation (Fabricland had bolts of it on sale for a ridiculously low price. It was 20 inches wide and I used almost 18 yards!!)

Oh and I should add that I put out a call to our sewing group and was given a lot!! narrow strips and scraps. So happy to make something out of them. The next one will be a community quilt for our guild outreach program.

sprice 11-19-2018 06:57 AM

Ginger--that is gorgeous! Nice job--I made a small one and am very happy with it. This tute sure was fun!

AngeliaNR 11-19-2018 04:03 PM

GingerK--it is beautiful! I have so enjoyed seeing everyone's versions of this--thanks to all of you.

Darcyshannon 11-20-2018 01:00 PM

Thank you for the instructions and ideas on using different sizes.

GingerK what a beautiful quilt. The idea of light fusible web as a foundation is a good idea.

I have lots of strings. Maybe I will start with a small one and see how it goes.

This is a wonderful tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques with all of us. Can't wait to get started on this and as a leader-ender project, like someone else said, this will be perfect.

jeanneb52 01-06-2019 03:32 PM

OMG it is wonderful, both the quilt and the tut

BonniFeltz 01-06-2019 05:16 PM

Just in time for the new year and new projects. Thank you so much for doing the tutorial.

R-sea 01-22-2019 05:46 AM

can someone tell me what dryer sheets are. They might be known as something else in Australia

Tartan 01-22-2019 08:53 AM

Dryer sheets are thin fiber sheets that have scents and static control on them that go in the dryer so your clothes come out smelling nice and without static cling. You can reuse them for sewing scraps onto them like a foundation square. You can also reuse them to sew around simple appliqués, cut a slit in the dryer sheet and tu4n the appliqué right side out.

R-sea 01-23-2019 03:29 AM

Thanks Tartan, I have never come across dryer sheets have never heard anyone talk about any thing like them. I do not have a clothes dryer , there is no need for one with our weather summer or winter , but in saying that young family's with children find them handy when we have three or more days of rain. When I go shopping next I will see if I can find anything like them

craft 01-28-2019 12:07 PM

Thank you for this lesson on string box quilt. (I never heard of this type of quilt before. I need to give it a try. That's one beautiful quilt you have made.

willferg 02-09-2019 04:06 PM

I've just started making these blocks. The tutorial is perfect. I've made four blocks already, and I've spent the past hour or so cutting strips from scraps. I plan to make a few blocks at at time, between other projects. Thank you again for posting this tutorial!

AngeliaNR 02-10-2019 06:36 AM

You are welcome. I am go gratified by the creations of the quilters on the board--thanks to all of you who have used the tutorial to make such lovely projects.

SandyinZ4 02-10-2019 08:59 PM

I can hardly wait to get started on mine. I will do it as a leader-ender project.

maviskw 02-11-2019 06:21 AM

I would like to make this, but mine will have different blocks. I will take half of the center triangle with added seam allowance, add white strips to one side, then add another half of triangle on the other end. The next block is just like that, but with dark strips. When these blocks are put together, they will have no seams in the striped areas.

redstilettos 04-02-2019 09:28 AM

I love the look of this. I think I'll have to start saving strings....but it will be so worth it!

Lilrain 04-03-2019 12:32 AM

Good idea. Thank you, I will use this.

Emma S 10-27-2019 06:48 AM

I am clearly very late to this party but this block is ingenious. Absolutely can not wait to try it

elnan 10-27-2019 07:57 AM

Getting in line with my Thank You's!

Tartan 10-27-2019 08:01 AM

Good to see this tutorial come up again! It was a fun way to use up scraps!

juliasb 10-27-2019 09:25 AM

Wow! I just bookmarked this one. It is to die for beautiful. Thanks for the tutorial!

copycat 11-02-2019 02:40 AM

I used pages from an unused phone book... worked great.

laurilli 11-02-2019 04:04 AM

maviskw I am having trouble visualizing your idea. But it sounds really interesting. I have lots of strips waiting for this project.

I think I've got this. Cut your template for the triangle in half vertically and add 1/4 seam allowance to the cut edge (to make a seam later). Place the half triangles to each end of your rectangular paper/muslin with the cut edges at the ends. Sew strings between the triangles, all light or all med/dark. I guess the second half triangle is sewn on last?

When you join the blocks, you are joining the half triangles, hence the seam allowance. Just remember to alternate the light and med/dark blocks to get the effect.

Thanks maviskw, for a good idea.

cviens 02-03-2020 05:52 AM

This is awesome! Thank you!!! I will definitely be making one !

cviens 02-03-2020 06:02 AM

Wow! I never thought to use them for appliqué...thank you!
