This is how we did a similar bookmark when we were kids. We simply folded a piece of construction paper in half lengthwise and cut the slashes at a 45 degree angle every 1/4 inch being careful to keep the slash end about 1/2 inches from the side. We then folded the paper flat and folded down every other V shape, slipping the point under the point below it. I repeated the same process only with fabric to make my blue bookmark.

It looks challenging.

Very nice. I can't figure out how you got three colors. Did you start with three pieces sewn together or add one at the end and start with two? Thanks! Maureen

Maureen NJ 12-21-2012 02:46 AM

Another question. How did you get the edges so straight? Did you use an exacto knife?

DebbieG 12-21-2012 04:38 AM

My instructions with the ruler used a fabric stabilizer, and yes there are three fabric, one on the base and then the 2 that make up the design. The two that make up the design are fused wrong sides together prior to the cutting.

Now I get it. Exacto knife? Thanks. Can't wait to try.

I'm going to make some of these..

Tartan 12-21-2012 06:16 AM

I fused two pieces of fabric together for the ones that I cut. I folded the fused fabric in half and marked the lines with my frixion pen. I cut the slashes while it was folded with a pair of scissors. I unfolded the cut fused fabric and folded down the chevrons and pressed with my iron. I laid the folded/pressed piece on top of another piece of fabric and sewed the center line down the chevrons to fix then in place and sewed around the edge 1/4 in out from the chevron edges. I used my pinking shears to finish the edge. I would have done step by step pictures but it is harder to do with my ipad.

That is fantastic. I have seen pictures in magazines but had no idea how it was done. Thanks soooooo much for sharing and explaning what appears to be a very complex pattern. Goes on my gotta' do list. You make it look almost easy.

Very clever. I don't recall this from my childhood. But they will make great gifts.

judylg 04-13-2013 05:44 AM

I have a ruler, that you can do something similar with fabric. A weak moment at a quilting show, have not used it yet and to tell you the truth not quite sure where it is. It was nice looking. Have to look later.

OHSue 04-21-2013 06:36 PM

Thanks so much for this, I had wanted to try doing some of these, but didn't want to invest in the ruler. I will have to make some of these.

tryitall 06-12-2013 12:05 PM

I just bought a ruler, today, to cut these! It keeps you from cutting in too far. The third color is the backing piece.

Jersey Gal 06-19-2013 05:42 PM

How clever. Thank you for sharing.

Quilty-Louise 09-18-2013 11:37 AM

I love this and the more I look at it the more I want to make
one in a larger version (much larger) like a wall hanging or so.

butrkup 09-19-2013 06:04 AM

Could I ask what the ruler is called so that I can order one?

BirdyFeathers 09-25-2013 09:25 PM

I too love this! Thank you so much for sharing! It is very pretty!

Banaz 12-12-2013 09:52 PM

Hi Tartan
What is the size of construction paper you have used?
Thanks

Tartan 12-13-2013 08:39 AM

The construction paper was cut 3 inches wide and 8 inches long.
The 3 fabric strips were cut in the same dimensions and the bookmark was trimmed after completion. For the 2 toned effect of the top layer of the bookmark, I used Wonderunder to fuse two strips of fabric together. I then cut the slits in the 2 toned prepared strip, folded and stitched it on top of a third darker strip. I sewed around the edge and down the middle to keep everything in place and used my pinking shears to give it a fancy edge.

Banaz 12-13-2013 07:14 PM

Thanks

Hi Tartan
Thank you for your reply.

SandyinZ4 12-13-2013 07:59 PM

Tartan, I wanted to thank you for posting this. It is on my bucket list because I collect bookmarks and this looks so cool! Hopefully, I will get some made in the coming year. :-)

Jamiestitcher62 12-19-2013 12:13 PM

I got the ruler when it came out and did a table runner and a bookmark. Now a year or more later I need to make a bookmark for someone who requested it and I can't remember how I did it.

Tartan 12-19-2013 12:28 PM

Jamie, if you have the ruler I believe there is a video on youtube. The one I watched was in Spanish? but you can see the process. I did did mine how we were taught in school with scissors.
