When pieced borders are created, sometimes they don’t fit perfectly around the quilt top, and extra strips are
needed between the quilt top and the borders. These are
called coping strips.
This tutorial shows how to calculate the size of the strips that need to be cut. I hope it's clear--it's the first tutorial I've ever even thought about posting. I also hope it will be useful to someone besides me--I've needed to do this calculation several times, so I finally decided to write equations for it.

I'm interested, but I'm on dial up internet service. It would take me a whole day to download 16.1MB! I'll have to check this out the next time I'm at our local library. Their service is lots quicker!

Thanks for the tute!

So sorry, I didn't notice how big it was. I redid it and it is much smaller now--please try again--it's attached to this message.

Thanks for trying. I get some message that is not compatible with my computer. I'm headed to the library tomorrow, so I'll look at it then.

Probably because I saved it in a newer version of MS Word. Try downloading it from this message now--I put it in an older version of Word.

Thanks!

Thanks for this info, I have printed it out and will put it in my reference files.

sammygirlqt 07-14-2011 09:22 PM

I would really like to learn this information but I can't open the file. I can only save it. This is probably because I don't have the MicroSoft Office program installed. New computers don't come with Microsoft installed so you have to buy it for over $100.00.

sammygirlqt 07-14-2011 09:23 PM

Sorry about this, as I was posting it came up in a PDF format. Thank you for this valuable information.

luana 07-15-2011 04:23 AM

Where were you when I needed you? This is just what I needed, and I'm sure I will need it again. Thanks so much.
Came through fine on my mac.

SueN 07-15-2011 04:25 AM

Thank you so much. For me it is SO timely. I struggled last night to calculate the width needed, but was afraid to cut until I looked at it again with "fresh eyes" this morning. I see my mistake!! Thank you.

Here's the deal:
I posted it 3 times
-first in PDF format, but it was a huge file
-next in MSWord 2007
-next in an early version of MSWord
If you are still having problems getting it, please pm me and I'll figure out a way to get it to you. :-)
I'm very happy to know that it's useful to folks.

puck116 07-15-2011 07:33 AM

Thank you very much. I was able to print from the 3rd version.

Thanks for the tute!

Thanks. I could (and did) open all your posts. My DH (math whiz) figured this out for me many years ago when I made his 50th wedding anniversary quilt, but I didn't remember how he did it.
For those who want this and can't open the files, send your email address to the author (PM) and she can copy, and paste directly into an email message. :)
Happy quilting everyone.

Wow ! I just googled coping stips & found this wonderful site.--sylviasquiltdepot.com--she has all kinds of useful measurements, etc. scroll down quite a ways to see the coping strips info.

Annz 07-15-2011 03:42 PM

Good info, Thanks

DonnaRae 07-15-2011 07:53 PM

That is really interesting. I never heard of coping strips before. So many years quilting and I am still learning. That's a good thing! Thanks for the download!

Thanks for the help. The very first quilt I started had to have coping strips, and I just lucked out that they were correct. The border was pieced just like the one in your tutorial.

jansquiltn 07-16-2011 01:45 AM

thank you so very much for taking the time.

dilyn 07-16-2011 02:23 AM

You are a life saver! I have been working on a quilt that I have been putting together by the seat of my pants so to speak and I've struggling with just this problem for 3 days! I have a little less hair now than I did before, but I think you saved the rest of it!
Bless you for your patience!
Thanks!

sankay 07-16-2011 04:20 AM

Thank You, I had no problem printing it.

JanieH 07-19-2011 02:53 PM

Thanks so much. I printed it off with no problem.

Download the FREE program "OpenOffice". It will open almost anything!

This tutorial is so easy to follow! Makes me want to do a quilt that has pieced borders!

klarina 07-21-2011 07:59 PM

Thank you so much. I always wondered what if border motif does not fit my top? Now I know there is a solution.

quiltgran2 07-22-2011 07:26 AM

This is terrific. Thank you for the help. I've struggled often enough in the past trying to figure this out.....no more!

Thanks so much carol45 for blessing us with all your work.

While looking at tutorials I saw this and had to see what coping strips are. I was so surprised. I have been doing this since I started quilting 6 years ago and never knew it was a technique. I just thought I was fixing my mistakes! Enjoyed your tutorial, BTW. Good job.

I learned a few years back that the extra $100 for Word really ends up worth the price if not more.

Suzanne57 09-27-2014 02:08 PM

For anyone who does not have Microsoft Office or Word, there is a free substitute.
https://www.openoffice.org/ I'm told that it work with MS office.
