A real 'churn dash' is the center dasher that makes an old fashioned butter churn work. The piece is shaped similar. Grandma showed me the butter churn she used as a child.

Have you ever tried "Picaso 3" for your photos??
It is the greatest photo editor I have ever seen, turns those blue/purples back to purple, just by clicking one
block. You can crop, email from site, burn CD's from site,
make photo albums, just anything. I think it is fantastic and it is free to download just go to www.picaso3.com
I think you will love it too!

chali1092 11-04-2010 11:30 AM

I have never really cared for the churn dash pattern until now.

Excellent Tutorial! Thank you!

Lynn Luker 11-04-2010 08:36 PM

Love it! I want to make a baby girl quilt with some fussy cut centers. This has really been a huge help! Does anyone have any idea about how much fabric it might take?

glenda5253 11-04-2010 09:55 PM

Thanks so much for the tutorial, Tippy! The churn dash pattern was a favorite of my mom's. The birds as the center fussy cut are beautiful but the possibilities are endless. I will be looking at large scale prints in a whole new way.

It depends on the size of the blocks you're making.. which, I suppose depends on the size of the design you fussy cut. I'd find the "fussy" fabric first and see what size block it lends itself to to determine that. Mine was perfect for the 4" center square (finished) so a 12" block (finished) was the perfect size. If your design is only good for a 3" finished square you'd shoot for a 9" block.

I have to echo everyone else's comments and tell you that you did a great tut. Will love to see the finished quilt. That is fabulous fabric and the colors are outstanding. I keep telling myself- no more fabric...but then oops here comes another beautiful one and I think I might have to revise my thinking!

I'v never been too fond of the pattern but with the fussy cut center, I love it. It's already on my list of must do's for the future. Your tutorial was excellent and your blocks are gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing.

Corky 03-14-2011 03:20 PM

Thank you!! Nicely done.

lallyann 03-18-2011 03:49 PM

I just found this tutorial, as I have been wanting to make a churn dash quilt. I think what I want to fussy cut is a bit bigger than will fit in a 4.5 in square. So my question is, can anyone tell me how to calculate how big I need to cut my corner squares to make the triangle squares? Thanks!

emt2004 03-18-2011 04:01 PM

Thank you so much, great job!........Michele

This has become my favorite thing to do with special squares or even not squares! Check out what I did here with these 8x10" panda panel prints that are going to be the corner blocks of a quilt I am making!
