I don't know why I didn't think of posting this Tut while I am Teaching this class. I have a class going on CDM and they will do the easy block first to get their feet wet and then we will do the difficult ones, as these ladies have not done PP too much but have done some.
This was the first block. It not hard, it's just crease the seam add the fabric, open and sew, fold back and crease and cut with the add a quarter ruler (aaq) etc. All three parts are done the same. then they are marked in the center, pinned and joined to the one above it. there are three pp sections and then the last large arc at the top and the small pie wedge at the bottom [ATTACH=CONFIG]259248[/ATTACH] |

We are doing just the large middle parts, as the rest of the block usually is the same but in a smaller version or just plain like the top one.
The block was a bit tricky. There is a fold on the stip to the right and it gets tucked in and when cutting the seam, one has to be careful to cut from the tri up. When I repeat this block, I will show the trick to it. |

This is the third block that is being done in class tomorrow. This is also tricky. The outlining of the spikes also has a fold and the cutting after, takes a little thinking. I will also repeat this for you in sections later.

This will be the fourth class and last block they will learn. I thought to take the pic as I was piecing it for you.
here is the pattern. Starting at the left. Lay the background piece and the first piece of the three little spears. Sew beyond the spear into the next background a 1/4 ins. You can see the folds of where the next piece is going. Here are the steps for the small spears. The paper pattern is cut a bit larger and when the piecing is finished, it is then cut right at the 1/4 ins. sewing line.
I personally remove all the paper before sewing the arcs together. To me it is easier to keep the 1/4 seam allowance that is so necessary. After I finish piecing the block, I place the block within a 12.5 square that I have drawn on my pressing board and I pin the block into that measurement and spray starch it and press it and let it cool. It is then a perfect 12.5 block. I do not trim the block. Doing so will make the points disappear. I make it fit. 1/4 inch seam allowance has to be adhered to, to make this quilt succesfull. When sewing the arcs together, pin the center and both sides. The sides must be laying straight across each other. I will also show this next time. The convave is on top of the convex and I find that if I push the concave up to the convex as I sew, it nestles nicely for sewing and everything eases in. Attention must be payed when sewing the arcs together, that the points don't get into the seam. If you have to, make the seam two or three threads less than the 1/4 ins. The points make the quilt. The first spear added and cut. Notice it extends 1/4 inch into the next seam for the background and 1/4 ins into the seam for the next spear. Here you can see the fold of the next sewing line and the 1/4 inch of the spears extending into it.
