Circles

Someone posted a link a while back about how to prepare perfect circles for appliqué without burning your fingers. Since I needed a couple today I thought I would see how it works. You cut your fabric circle with a seam allowance on. You cut a thin cardboard circle of the exact size you want. You cut a square of aluminum foil and lay your fabric face down on the foil with the cardboard circle inside. Holding the cardboard circle in place, you gather up the foil and iron around the circle the edges well. Here are a couple of pictures of how they turned out.

And here is a picture after ironing and the circle is ready to appliqué down after I take out the cardboard. I will use this method again because it works!

WOW - great circle. Can you reuse the foil a lot?

Tartan 04-25-2014 10:28 AM

I only needed a couple of circles but I imagine you could reuse the foil until you tear it. Mine is Reynolds heavy duty because that's what I use in the oven.

I was talking to a friend of mine who appliques all the time and she told me what she uses. She said she uses washers, you can get them at the hardware store in many sizes. She cuts the circles larger than the washer, bastes around the edge, and pull tight. You then iron and after it cools you can remove the thread and washer and you have perfect circles. I thought it was a great idea, I am going to try it next time I need berries on an applique piece.

QuiltingJaguar 10-04-2014 05:08 PM

Wow I have to make some tiny berries for a wall hanging about 50 of them and want try this, would be so much better, thank you for sharing.,

Wow... you're a genius!

Wholeheart Mom 03-20-2016 03:31 AM

I love this! I wonder if it will work for other simple shapes, like leaves. I may have to test this theory :)
