I see so many questions from newbies asking how to have a perfect point on their stars.....here's what I do. I hope it helps you all! BTW - sorry about the 1st picture -- I had the camera setting wrong....and thought it would be okay.

Sorry - had the wrong setting. This shows the front of my "star"...Make sure you have 1/4" from the tip of the star to the edge.

This intersection is the point of your star. Make sure it's 1/4" from the raw edge.

This is how it will look on the right side.

Sew across your seam....Do not sew on either side of that point. This is the critical piece of making a perfect point

I like your tutorial! To add to that, if I may, another trick is to stay just a thread width away form that point. Really helps make that corner crisp.

Great pictures to illustrate this Point :D:D:D (pun intended)

Great tute! I had heard this from the board (maybe you?) a while back and have used it since. It prevents so much frustration. Thank you, thank you

Thank you for showing how to make a good point. I tried making a pinwheel and the point was, well, you know, a great big mess.

You are all very welcome!!! :)

great tip...............i have been accidently doing that

Ritacarl 04-25-2011 08:27 AM

Thanks for the tute and the explanation. I printed out all the remarks so I have it with me when I'm sewing. I kinda giggled when you quilters mentioned how much you use a seam ripper. Oh how unfeeling I was. I have ripped and resewed and reripped until I had to buy a new ripper. Thanks again

Thanks for the tip. I have been doing the partial seam (just a thread width away from the point) in larger stitches then sewing proper sized stitches at exactly the right place. That way, if its wrong I can pull them easily. Usually works well.

I know this help me a great deal. I didn't understand what I was doing wrong. Thanks.

BoJo 06-01-2011 02:51 PM

Great tip.

coolcat 06-03-2011 07:51 AM

Sometimes I have found that I don't have 1/4" at the top to be able to get a perfect point. What did I do wrong?

Also, how do you get your pinwheels so each seam matches in the middle??

I have problems with that without quite a strugle and then it still doesn't work. I almost wear the fabric out with tearing out the stitches over and over.

betsyf 06-04-2011 09:46 AM

Thank you, this will help a lot.

"Sew across your seam....Do not sew on either side of that point. This is the critical piece of making a perfect point"

When you say "do not sew on either side of that point" do you mean left or right or top or bottom? (based on the picture)

Or, take pictures of what NOT to do.

Thanks!

Just today I finally got up the nerve to try stars (again - but we won't talk about that) and using your instructions they came out perfectly! Thank you!!

knlsmith 09-16-2011 01:15 AM

thank you! I always forget how to do this for some silly reason. ROFL

emsgranny 09-16-2011 11:45 AM

Thanks - I need all the little tips I can get!!

djvaug 09-16-2011 06:04 PM

I hope I can do this. It looks easy enough....

I had to quit 3 BOMs because of losing my points. They all had too many flying geese and HSTs. I think I'm hopeless. I don't understand "don't sew on either side". What does that mean? Don't I sew straight across? Help me!!!

I'll try to help!!!

You're going to have two fabrics that fit together....one of the "blocks" or pieces will have the flying geese. When you put them to the sewing machine, make sure the flying geese is laying on the top. If you look at it, you'll see two seams that come to a point (that's the point of the star). You're going to sew down the new seam....and DO cross that point where those two seams of the flying geese met. If your seam is to the left, you'll lose the point -- if your seam is to the right, you'll have a gap. When you're finished, you should have 3 seams that meet exactly. If you don't see the two seams where they meet, then pull one of the seam allowances the other way --- you'll see it!!!
