we've made it to Week 2 of the DJ Cyber Block Party.

some housekeeping stuff before we move onto the tutes.

i'm attaching 2 articles that give some good tips on redrafting patterns for PP and how to design your own PP patterns.

you might find some of it helpful.

I've also attaching the DJ Schedule - the original had 2 typos and i don't know if i ever posted the corrected one.

Notes on D5

this is a fairly easy block. its up on that quilt if you want to check it out

1) Blunt the corner on Unit A to help with lining up the units to each other

2) Piece Units E, F, & G to each other

3) Attach Units A & B to the center unit (EFG)

4) Attach Units C & D to the other sides to finish the block off.

Notes to G10

another simple block. i'll detail the piecing order i used, i think it helps with lining everything up. its up on that quilt if you want to check it out.

1) Attach Units A, C, & D to each other - working from the corner towards the inside. so A sews to C and then attach D.

2) Attach Units B, G, & F to each other - working from the corner towards the inside. so B sews to G and then attach F.

3) Attach the ACD section to the center Unit E and then attach the BGF unit to the other side of center Unit E.

Notes to BR2

(the no longer dreaded triangle, thanks to the people who work ahead - they've worked all the kinks out)

1) Print as 5x8 in the DJ software

2) Re-group the triangle pieces (see next post for notes on how to do that)

3) Sew units A & B to each other

4) Sew units C & D to each side of the AB unit you just completed

5) then just attach each section ascending up the triangle. attach E, then F, then G, then H.

BR2 Re-grouping notes

i've attached a PDF of the regrouped PP pattern because i know some people are struggling with learning the software.

if you're comfortable try to regroup it yourself for practice. use these notes, the pic posted regarding BR2, and the PDF file to help you give this a try.

go to print the foundation pattern for BR2.

make sure its 5x8.

1) click on the "sections" tab.

2) click on "start over"

3) click on the 5 little triangles on the bottom row and then click "group"

4) click on next row of 3 little triangles and the click "group"

5) click on the left side long triangle that spans these two sections and click on "group" and do the same thing for the right side long triangle

6) then click on the next row of triangles (3 across) and click on "group" the flying geese type unit

7) then click on the next rows of triangles and click on "group"

8) then click on the next rows of triangles and click on "group"

9) and do the same for the next rows.

10) then click on preview and move everything around and print.

D5 DONE WITH THE CUT DOWN METHOD

You will need:

1 white 3" center
1 dark 3" x 5 1/2" strip
1 white 2" x 2 1/2" strip

------------------------------

2 white 2 1/4" squares
1 dark 2 1/2' x 10 1/2" strip

-------------------------------

1. Sew the 3" x 5 1/2" strip to one side of the center square
2. Trim the dark to 5/8"

Rhonda 01-07-2010 12:37 PM

3. Sew the dark to the other side of the square.
4. Trim to 5/8"

Rhonda 01-07-2010 12:40 PM

5. Sew one white strip to the dark strip as shown here.
6. Sew on the other white strip to the other end of the dark strip.

Rhonda 01-07-2010 12:46 PM

Now you have one center piece and one dark strip piece ready to put the two together.

I like to use a tack or a stitch to hold the seams together instead of pins. It helps to keep it from moving.
Make sure your seams are matching when you tack or pin. If they are not then you need to fix it til they are matching before you go on to the next step. Accuracy is important in minis.
Also make sure your seams are straight and not pulled to one side. If you need to fix this now is the time. Sew a seam along the first seam to change the angle of it to where it will lay straight and not crooked.

7. Tack or pin your seams together
8. Sew the dark strip onto the center
9. Check to make sure everything is straight
10. Trim to 5/8"

Rhonda 01-07-2010 12:48 PM

11. Sew the remaining dark strip to the other side
12. Trim to 5/8"

Now you have the center section completed.

On to the borders

13. Cut your white 2 1/2" squares into triangles
sorry I didn't take a pic of this
14. Sew the 3 1/4" x 4" dark strip to one short side of the triangle.
15. Trim to 3/4"
16. Sew the 3 3/4" x 4" dark strip to the other short side
17. Trim to 3/4"

Rhonda 01-07-2010 12:56 PM

2 Attachment(s)
18. Trim the bottom of the triangle section
19 Repeat above steps for the other 3 triangle sections
20. Center the triangle section and sew onto one side of the center section

Rhonda 01-07-2010 01:04 PM

2 Attachment(s)
When you center the triangle section to the center section you can match up the edges and then fold back the fabric til you can see where the white connects between both on the seams. this is what you want. If it is not matching then you need to move it over til it is matching. This will give you points that match after it is sewn.

The second picture here shows where I didn't get it to match and I had to take that out and redo it so it matched right.

Rhonda 01-07-2010 01:07 PM

21. Continue to sew on the triangle sections til you have them all sewn.

Now you have the block completed.
With a 5" template or with your ruler trim it to a 5" unfinished size.

And you are done!

WOW! Thanks for all the encouragement and wonderful resources, Klue. I'd be clueless (couldn't resist) without you.

Rhonda, your blocks look fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to share your method.

NorBanaquilts, I see you've been really busy, also! Great job on your blocks.

Feeling like an underachiever, I've not thought about the fabric selection yet for week 2 LOL. I'll get there, though.

Have a great evening, RETRO

BlueChicken 01-10-2010 01:23 AM

I was just updating my journal and I noted next to the block for BR2 to watch the bulk on the horizontal seams, I had to trim them nice and neat otherwise there was a lot of fabric to get through. And it made me wonder if that's part of the reason the DJ software grouped BR2 in such an odd fashion, to reduce bulky seams.

thats an excellent point and you've might have hit the nail on the head.

it is an odd way to put the triangle together and there must be a reason.
