DIY Suspension System $60.00
2 Attachment(s)
I made a DIY quilting suspension system for my mid arm that was super easy and cheap. It would work for domestics, too.
2 dog grooming arms..mine were on sale for $25.00 each and are height adjustable, 2 bungie cords and 2 clamps with holes in the handles for the bungees to attach to. That was about it. Took me 10 minutes and works great. I think you do have to re-adjust it often, but I can get to all corners of 12" block with no drag, so far and as I learn to work with them it might get even better. It makes a big difference. You are so clever. To me, there's nothing better than a DIY project. You Rock!

That is some amazing ingenuity!

Great innovation!!
How are the uprights held onto the table? I'm asking, because it doesn't look as though it is clamped and that it just goes down the back of the table. Thanks for the info. |
The dog grooming arms were a stroke of genius! Way to go, Watson!
|
Well done!

Quilt E, the arms come with clamps. They are clamped onto the table at the back.

Watson .... and now, for more questions ... being that we are somewhat "neighbours" .... Where did you get the dog grooming arms? Their not-on-sale price would be? (thinking that I might score the same sale!) |
I got them from Ren' s Pet Warehouse. The website said $39.00 I believe but the sales lady only charged me $25.00. Clamps and bungies from Dollarama.

Thanks ... just called Ren's here, and yes, they have them but no deal! :(
I even tried pleading that you had got a sale on them, but no dice! So I will wait and watch for now. I do have the clamps and bungies already. I called a few other places and all referred me back to Ren's, so I guess that is the place to go. It looks pretty slick and fits nicely with your Tiara set up. BTW ... love the looks of that quilt! |
Watson...you should have been an engineer. What a handy set up and thank you for sharing.
|
jmoore...I'll tell my husband, (who is an engineer :D ) that you said so. He will get a good laugh out of that.

What a great setup. Even at full price for the parts, it is a bargain. I'll being looking for the parts in the PNW.
|
I made mine also for my sit down George machine...put two big eye screw bolts in the ceiling, attached two bungee cords, and ordered the clamps online, they are used to clamp sides of quilts for longarming..works great for me..easy peasy and wasn't a lot of money spent..at all.

A few years back there was a thread on here about different ways people used usual things to hold up there quilts while quilting.
You are very talented. |
Looks just like my Tiara set-up. I've used dog grooming arms for several years. They work so well. I even have the same clamps- Harbor Freight, I think!

Great Idea
I just recently stumbled upon your post. What a great idea. Found two arms at Chewy's for $21.95 each. Can't wait for them to come in.
|
Hey Watson- Great minds think alike! I did this for my Sweet Sixteen a couple of years back- love it for quilting a big quilt.
|
I think this would also help with the distribution of the quilt for putting the binding on. I've been playing around with this idea for years and haven't done it yet! Mine would be from the ceiling like sak658.

Being a quilting newby it's stewpid kweschun time...what is the suspension system for? I mean, how is it helpful?
|
mcadwell-when you're fmq a quilt, especially a larger one, drag(weight) is your enemy, with the suspension system, you don't have the drag, so consequently you can move the quilt much easier. Please don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they're stupid, because they're not.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate it.
