EZ Half Square Triangles!

I usually dread making HSTs but I have been wanting to make a certain project. So, searching this board I went! I have used some of the methods discussed but I hate marking! I was inspired by Rhonda's method. For some reason, my brain went to this direction.

It is quick, no marking, little waste and you can make whatever unfinished size of HST you want-need.

Please ask questions if my directions are not clear.

have fun! Now on to my project!

Thanks for sharing this! I sure don't like making HSTs....I'm going to try this method.

Sandygirl 12-28-2013 08:08 AM

To clarify...if you want your HST to end up 2" "finished". -cut the strips 2" wide.

Your UNFINISHED block will be 2 1/2" .

I wanted my finished block to be 4" so I cut my strips 4". The unfinished block is 4 1/2". Once sewn into the project it will be 4".

Great Sandy! This does look easier. I will try it also.

pojo 12-28-2013 08:29 AM

hi thank you

Tartan 12-28-2013 08:34 AM

Great, clear tutorial! How did you get the cute text boxes in the pictures and load more than 1 picture at a time?

postal packin' mama 12-28-2013 09:24 AM

Wonderful job on the tute!
May I add that if the leftover fabric you see at the end of the strip set isn't quite long enough to cut another HST, it often can still be made into a HST by sewing along the angle at the lower edge, then removing the other stitches & pressing it out (AFTER you verify that it's the right size of course).

From Ipad, I take my pictures, then I use the pics With Words app to add text, then I resize the pictures with Simple Resize app. (480 is the size I use) Then I load the pictures in the order of the tutorial. LAST TO FIRST is the order..then "submit". They load in the order I uploaded them.

It takes a while to learn these apps but they are great once you do! I have attached a pic of the Apps mentioned.

I suggest that as you resize the pictures. Start a separate Album and load them there. Then they dont get lost .

Thanks, I will have to see if I can do that on my new iPhone?

Tartan 12-28-2013 10:18 AM

Thanks Sandygirl, I will have to give it a try.

QuiltnNan 12-28-2013 12:28 PM

thanks for taking the time to make the tutorial. i've seen this in the past and it looks so quick and easy. the only drawback in my mind is that the edges of the hst are bias edges.

Sandygirl 12-28-2013 03:41 PM

I can see where the bias edges can be a concern. I would use spray starch on the blocks. And carefully pin the pieces together. We can 't avoid bias edges on triangles.

Thanks for this. I usually use the lazy girl ruler, but this looks easier for some reason. Will try and let u know.
Another thanks for the apps. I just call my BIL to ask how to resize, but alas he has a PC and is not in the Mac world. I will try those too.

True there are bias edges on HSTs but I prefer mine to be on the inside ( long leg of triangle) rather than on the outside edges.....The EASY ANGLE template is the easiest way to make HST...don't have to"starch" to handle. If I am making a ton of them I like to use triangles on a roll.......just my way of doing things....or my GO. If using small scraps, just stack and crank and out they come!

margie77072 12-29-2013 05:29 AM

Do you end up with bias edges on the outside?

Unfortunately, yes, the bias edges (2) are on the outside.

I actuallychave that ruler and have never used it. What a great time saver and so accurate. Thanks for sharing.

Jan in VA's way keeps the biases tamed:

Thank you. I am going to try this method. You directions were wonderful.

trolleystation 12-29-2013 10:43 AM

Thanks for the tute. Good idea. I must need a 'shrink' though, because I like making hst's. Different strokes for different folks.

linynp 12-29-2013 10:44 AM

Brilliant!

true...but I hate marking. ;)

Oh boy....i am excited. went out in the poring rain to Joann's to get a templete......already had fabric....came home and tried it and I CAN DO IT. !!!! thank you so much for the tute. Now I am going to spray with starch.

Nilla 12-29-2013 03:45 PM

This is how I make my HST's. It's soooo much faster than every other method I've tried, including using the Easy Angle ruler. As far as the bias, I've found that if you don't finger them or tug on them, it's really not a problem.

MS quilter 12-29-2013 04:07 PM

That sounds so much easier! Can't wait to try it!

tazcreek 12-30-2013 08:25 PM

Thank you!!! I dread HST's!!!! This sound so much easier!!

Hi Sandy
I like your idea just a question do you line up the ruler with the edge of the fabric or do you line it up on the 1/4 stitch line? you have sewn down each side

I line my ruler on the bottom edge...making sure that the top point of the ruler does not extend above that seam...see as pictured.

And I just learned how to use my old cell phone to find contacts and how to post pictures in the forum. What is the world coming to! Technology is moving too fast for me.

Caroline S 01-13-2014 06:38 AM

Excellent tutorial. Thank you.

Liddibeth 01-24-2014 12:25 PM

Hi
Now I know how to do HSTs, any help with the triangle unit with four triangles> Quick pieced if possible. Tgabks form sunny but snowy and cold Labrador.

cathycabot 01-24-2014 01:24 PM

Hi from Cathy I know what you mean about lab. I lived & worked in Lab City for 10 years back in the 70's very nice but I can relate to cold winters.

gramquilter2 01-24-2014 01:54 PM

Thanks for the directions, I will try this method on my next project.
