Found this online if you need the math done for you.

Which equals

finished half-square size x 2 + 1" = cut square

Thank you!!! Maybe you can help with my challenge? I found a 12" block pattern online. However, all the HST are to be cut at 3 7/8". This is a real pain in the hiney, not to mention accuracy.

I just used this tutorial yesterday, and I really like how the HST's turned out. Thanks for sharing this great info.

This is so ingenious ! I am working on a quilt that is made of all HST and have been sewing them the old fashion way. Not anymore, I will try this method!

Thanks so much, LucyintheSky! I needed 48 HST's for a quilt I'm working on and found your tute just in time. This worked out so great. I was afraid they would come out a little skimpy, but the formula leaves just enough margin for error so that I could square up each HST to the right size with very little waste.

Our guild challenge this year is an all 1/2 square triangle project so this will help get straight of grain blocks to work with in the project. Thank you so much for posting.

Great...thank you for the tut...

I've made some of these HST's that don't make a pinwheel. The two sides don't go together correctly. You need to make two sets to get a pinwheel and then they are going opposite ways. What do these HST's do? I could try it, but does anyone know? (And save me some time.)

Take a look at Missouri Star Quilt Co site. Her video tutorial should help you right away. Good Luck!! Also, if you have questions they are very good at getting back to you via email!

I have been trying this and I can't get my squares to come out right.
What size block would I start with to end up with a 3 1/2 inch square.
Thanks again
