Five Easy Pieces Charity Quilt Pattern by Jeanne S.
 

This is a great quick pattern for charity or a good beginner pattern for those looking for something easy with no seams to match.
1. Cut all fabrics (except sashing, see below #8) in 4 1/2" strips. This works well for scraps, FQ and yardage.
2. My quilt has 20 blocks, but can easily be made smaller or larger by adjusting the number of the blocks. As shown, this quilt is a generous throw size finishing at 58" x 72".
3. Your center square should be the same as the sashing background fabric, white in my photo quilt.
4. Cut 20 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" center squares from your solid background fabric.
5. From your various print or other color fabrics, cut the following:
20 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares
40 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
20 12 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
6. Assemble your blocks by sewing one print 4 1/2" square to your center square. Then sew one 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to one side of the 2 piece unit. Sew a second 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle to the other side of the center square unit. You should now have your center square with print fabrics sewn on three sides. Your last piece, the 12 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle is sewn across the bottom of the block, keeping the first white square in the center. Your block is done! The block should measure 12 1/2" square Unfinished, and will be 12" square finished in the quilt.
7. Lay out your 20 blocks in a manner that evenly distributes the colors/prints and also rotate them so that the two 4 1/2" squares are 'pointing' in different directions around the quilt.
8. Add sashing. Sashing is cut in 2 1/2" wide strips, white in my example. You can do this in rows or using what I call the 'sash as you go' method. I don't like sewing long strips of sashing, so I cut my sashing pieces and sew them to each block individually as follows: Sew one 12 1/2" white strip to the left side of all blocks. For all blocks EXCEPT the far right column, Sew one 14 1/2" white strip to the top of all blocks. You will now have sashing around all blocks except for the far right column and the bottom of the last row of blocks. For the bottom row of blocks, sew one 14 1/2" strip across the bottom of the block. For the far right column of blocks, sew 12 1/2" strips to both sides, then sew a 16 1/2" strip to the top and bottom of each block. You should now have all blocks with sashing around all 4 sides.
9. Sew blocks together by rows, then join rows to complete your top.
10. With simple quilting, this is a 1-2 day quilt project.
