I had a request for more info on this process. I did not purchase a pattern for this. I saw it on a blog and asked if I could use the idea. (a long time ago!) You could use this method with t-shirts or regular fabric. Contrast is very important to maintain the 'shadow'. The shadow should be dark and the background/sashing should be much lighter. The recipent of this quilt requested no white as there were pets in the house.

You can use all the same size blocks or set them like a puzzle as I did. I did all the blocks first and then laid them out on my design wall till I had a setting I was happy with.

Here is the block make up

each center has two borders. A square of background (the small one) and a strip of the 'shadow'. Your strip can be as long or as wide as the block_ the WIDTH of the shadow needs to be uniform. You can see from the picture that all the blocks in this quilt are different. I cut the small background squares the same and sewed them on strip of the shadow. I sewd one side of shadow, trimmed it and then sewed on the other side of the shadow.

Let me know if you need a step by step mock up of this block.

Thanks I'll keep this for future use. Your shadowing is very effective. I really like your quilt.

Thanks for the info--very useful.

Wow! This looks great. Thanks for the drawing to show the shadow piecing. What width did you use for the shadow strips as compared to the width of the strips around the blocks (in light grey)? I have a t-shirt quilt on my bucket list. Thank you!

YAY! I finally got in my own thread! If I can get back in tomorrow or Thursday, I will do a step by step of this block with suggestions on sashing. If I cannot, I will start a new thread.

Beth, was this done in PDF form or anything? I have a tshirt quilt planning to make for grandson and I love yours, would love to have the step by step and block sizes you used if possible. Thanks so much for putting this tutorial together for us.

This is the very best t-shirt quilt I have ever see. Very well put together and a good idea, even for a panel type quilt with different types of pictures involved. Thank you for the tutorial.

I'm curious how you quilted this? I've got my own shadow-box (floating block?) top done but can't seem to figure out how to quilt it. I've searched the Board and the web for something other than SID but nothing is speaking to me. It's been done for over a month, laid out so I can see it every time I walk by, and still can't seem to make a plan. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

soccertxi 09-20-2016 09:45 AM

Cathy, I did not do a PDF as I don't know how! I can do a more step by step if that is what you are looking for. This is more a method than a true pattern.

As I recall (and can enlarge my picture!), I think I just meandered. I did have to avoid the plastic type logos making sure that they didn['t 'puff' out with too much outlining. I would think if you wanted to do each 'shadow' the same way with a similar design in each block. This might depend on the size/uniformity of your blocks. Since this one was all over the map with sizes, I decided to meader. This leaves the blocks to shine on their own w/o overpowering them with quilting. Hope this helps!

I love this. I think I might have to make a t-shirt quilt now by this method. I missed the instructions so will have to go back and read.
