I use sticky back stabilizer and put it on the back side of my hoop… Take the bottom part of your emb. Hoop and place it on your stabilizer trace around it with a pencil cut it just a little wider than your tracing line. After you have marked where your design will be placed lay your
towel in the hoop and center it then make sure it sticks down after I have done this I take apiece of the water soluiable stabilizer and cut it to fit the area that am embroidering and spray a little 505 or machine bast or pin around to hold it in place.. U needs the top clear stibalizer because of the loops in the terry cloth

AVQuilter 09-06-2010 07:27 AM

Your tute is great and thanks so much...I usually don't do towels as I was not sure of the process but now I am thanks to you!!

mocha827 09-06-2010 10:04 AM

How do you get the sticky off the back of the towel?

The sticky back stabilizer is like your post it notes it pulls of the towel without damaging and the sticky stays on the paper not the fabric…. like tear away stabilizer but with sticky back. Hope this makes sense. You can keep position your fabric on it then when you get it like you want you take your hand and press the fabric onto the sticky. If you ever use this you will love it you don’t need to use the top part of your hoop because the stabilizer will hold your project. It’s great for thick items that are hard to hoop. Good luck.

I did this with my first towel and all went well with the first two designs. The third one was too dense as I found out later. How do you "de- dense" a pattern?

Am not sure if I under stand what U mean but if the design is to tight then U may need to make the pattern larger (resize the design) to release some of the density. If the towels were of a different weave that may have played a part in the outcome. Hope this helps… Let me know what happens .Good Luck

Annz 09-06-2010 05:25 PM

Congratulations to you. that was a great tute.

mocha827 09-06-2010 05:30 PM

thanks for the reply about the stabilizer. Do you know the brand of it? I have done many towels and am looking for a good leave in stabilizer that will tear cleanly away on the back. thanks for all your time.

Dee 09-06-2010 05:33 PM

Good tute. Thanks for sharing.

Well am a bargain hunter and look for the best price or what’s on sale. If I get something that I don’t like then I can tell U not to get that one but so far I haven’t gotten any stabilizers that I have been happy with Sooooooooo in answer to your question I think any brand would be ok. Sometimes we have to learn by trial and error. :-D

Thanks Caroltee. I'll try that. I really haven't spent the time to learn all the ins and outs of embroidery. My ASG has started a club to take us from the very beginning to wherever. I sure need it. Not stupid, just lazy. Too much quilting. You guys keep putting on beautiful quilts that I decide I must try. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!!!

Caroltee 09-07-2010 10:59 AM

Know what U mean Been there done that toooooooooo
Good Luck. If U need help there are lots of Quilting Angels on this board to give a helping hand.

sewmuchmore 09-07-2010 11:17 AM

Awesome I have always wanted to know how to do this. Happy as can be woohoo!!!! I am bookmaking this one.

zz-pd 09-08-2010 01:40 AM

Thank you, and God bless.

maggie2122 09-16-2010 11:12 PM

Great tutorial. I have also used netting on the top between the layers, it disappears in the embroidery and gives a lift to the threads so the embroidery really pops out. I match the netting or tulle to the color of the towel.

Very good tut. I will go back to my kitchen towels and do them your way. I think I see my mistakes.

Added aside. We have just started a new machine embroidery group in our ASG club. These are the VERY experienced members who are going to start from the beginning and try to help some of us who at times, just don't get it. We will be able to call or email the EMs with questions that most of the time I think are so stupid. I don't know why. I have mastered every sewing skill from tailoring to free motion painting, but can't seem to master the EMs yet. I know..... it's practice, practice etc. like quilting. I love it and am computer savvy so persevere.

Thats a good idea... never though of using netting. I guess tullie would work 2. Thanks for the tip.

All three towels were the same weave etc. I even used H2O soluble on top to keep the pattern from sinking in the weave. I'm hoping this class will help solve my questions.
