It is very easy to keep your blocks aligned when using sashing strips, even if you don't use cornerstones.

Create your rows as usual, with a sashing strip between each block. Add sashing to the bottom of your first row of blocks. Turn this row to the wrong side and using a pencil and ruler, mark every block seam on the wrong side of the bottom sashing strip.

When you add your next row of sashed blocks, pin first so that each new block seam aligns with a mark on the sashing strip. If you have a little excess fabric in a block, ease that block to fit the sashing. If the sashing has a little excess fabric in it, ease the sashing to the block.

The pencil marks take the place of cornerstones so that when you are finished, all of your blocks are lined up from row to row.

Good tip, Prism99, on the sashing without cornerstones. They are a bit difficult to make look good, so I am probably like others, do it the easy way, with... cornerstones. I need to file this in important info and USE IT NEXT TIME.... soon......

thanks. Julie

sarahelloyd 04-27-2010 04:05 PM

thanks for a great tip, I am just about to start something like that and was puzzling about how to do it!

Thanks for sharing.

How cool! I'll have to give this a try as I have just finished the rows for a flannel quilt and measured the sashing strips and am ready to sew them on! Being an inexperienced quilter, I hadn't even thought of the blocks not lining up without cornerstones...

MS quilter 04-27-2010 06:29 PM

What a cool idea! I have struggled w/ this for years! You're a genius.

Rainbow 04-28-2010 02:12 AM

Wonderful tute !!

Zephyr 04-28-2010 05:24 AM

I'll bet there are a lot of us who have been avoiding sashing strips where we could. Thanks for a neat, and easy idea to solve that problem!

Would you be so kind as to show us a photo of this? Thanks

Sorry, I'm computer-challenged when it comes to posting pictures. Not to mention that I can never find a digital camera in the house when I need one, thanks to my teenaged dd!

Good idea, am going to try it today.

madamekelly 12-12-2010 08:14 PM

Well, smack me and call me dufus! I used no corner stones the first time I used sashing on a quilt, thinking cornerstones would be harder! I figured out your 'matching method' on my own out of desperation. After reading your tutorial, I can see how much easier it would have been with cornerstones! Amazing, you taught a lesson you didn't even intend to. Aren't you clever!

pab 12-12-2010 09:22 PM

Thanks prism..a great concept! pab

Annaquilts 12-12-2010 09:27 PM

Now was that timely. I have the rows sewn on my DS and soon to be DIL wedding quilt. Now to match it all. With your tute I will be off to a good start. Now why did I not think of that. LOL So obvious!

AnnaK 12-15-2010 09:10 PM

Thanks. You make it "seam" so easy! :-)

I am so glad this information came along in this news letter.I have an awful time with making my sashing strips come out in line. No matter how much I pin they will be off a thread or two.
Thanks!

Ghetohound 07-20-2011 09:08 PM

Being new to quilting and using sashing for the very first time on my second quilt AND just finishing my rows, this couldn't have come at a better time!!! Whew!! THANK YOU!

Lilrain 07-20-2011 09:24 PM

Thank you so much for this. i will use your method in the future. i always use cornerstones as I cannot stand the misalignment otherwise

saf 07-21-2011 05:25 AM

Ignorant newbie here. What are corner stones please?

twixbar 07-24-2011 01:33 PM

Wonderful tip. thank-you.

DITTO DITTO DITTO!!! Except I didn't read this tutorial before I did a no-cornerstone thing and had little lineup issue.

Thank you for the great tip!!! :) :) :)

Putz 10-10-2011 03:58 PM

Sounds like a great tip. I'll be trying it tonight or tomorrow for my Grandson's Christmas Quilt.

Question - what's a cornerstone?

Just started quilting in January, so some terms are very new to me.

sewingsuz 01-18-2014 08:20 PM

Thank you for the great tip. i have not used sashing for a long time.

links123 01-20-2014 11:53 PM

I wiil design this quilt for my grandson. what a nice design it is.

carolaug 01-21-2014 03:32 AM

Great tips and perfect timing! I have been trying to decide what to do with some fabric that I did not want to cut up smaller than 5 inch squares. I am going to try doing the corner stone sashing.

skjquiltnut 01-30-2014 08:34 PM

Great idea! Will try this asap......Is there anyone out there that can put a few together and upload a photo for us?

janjj 03-28-2014 09:25 PM

thanks for the great tip. I have a BOM laying on my floor now. deciding how I want the blocks arranged and was trying to figure out how to do the sashings. Now I know !
