How to hand stitch a grandmother's flower garden block

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, that is what you will be getting. I'm not sure how I'll give instructions along. But, please bear with me. First you sew the middle hexagon to the first petal by placing them right sides together and stitching across the top. Then you place your second petal and sew it into the L of the two pieces.

I hope you can see the progression of how to sew each petal on. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

no thimbles? when do you sleep? thanks for the pix, you seem to have no problems sewing them together...looks like it would keep me busy--now if I could just sit for more than a few minutes....LOL

I do this only when I sit and watch TV. It relaxes me.

thanks for taking the time to show us this technique

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 05-30-2014 07:06 PM

That is exactly how I do mine, too. It works for me easier than EPP.

Your instructions look great. Very easy to follow. Are you going to do the next round? Or is this to be appliqued?

It looks like you sew from edge to edge--not ending 1/4". Is that right? How do you press the seams?

This must be how my grandmother did her flower garden blocks, because I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have done EPP.

Thanks for the pics. It gives me an even greater appreciation of my grandmother's creation that was hand pieced AND hand quilted!

Yes, I sew edge to edge. The next row is done in exactly the same way. You just one in and keep going until you get back to it.

I misinterpreted this, I think. When sewing on the other pieces, and you get to the Y, there should be 1/4 inch left on the edge so that when you turn the top hexagon, it goes right over into place. Clear as mud. That is why I took all of the pictures.

Thank you for this tutorial. I am working on a GFG for my niece who is expecting the first girl baby in our family for 16 years. I have been leaving a 1/4" on each seam, but now realize, thanks to you, that I don't have to fuss with that.

Nice job on this tutorial. You're courageous to do a GFG...they are time-consuming but worth the effort. Would love to see photo of others you have completed.

Thank you for the tutorial. I've got some pieces cut out from many years ago. Maybe I'll get them out and start working on them. You're the greatest!!!!

Well this is brilliant and I just happen to have some hexes in front of me so I will give it a go. It is 9:15pm and this is the first new thing I learned today. It was a slow day. Thanks for sharing, really, really thanks!:D
peace

I don't press!!! That is the beauty of stitching by hand. It cuts down on all that ironing. No pressing needed because you are automaticly finger pressing as you sew.

Here are two of mine that I did. NO!!! I did not choose the colors on the second one. My MIL had these all cut out. The pink, yellow and green one was the first one that I ever did. MIL showed me how to piece these. She was in her late 80' when she taught me how to put them together.

gramquilter2 06-02-2014 12:45 PM

hairquilt 06-03-2014 05:46 AM

I so want to do one of these but am so intimated by the process. Going to try it your way & see how it goes. I've never handpieced before!! Thanks for pics in tute makes it easier to understand!

grandmaNicole 06-03-2014 06:09 AM

Thank you very much for the tutorial , the quilt is gorgeous .
I have not tried hexagon, but are on the waiting list .

Gladys 06-09-2014 11:33 AM

Oh my goodness. I've sewn several hundreds of those together but never did it like that. I'll have to try it. Thanks for the Tute!

bearisgray 07-07-2014 02:12 PM

You just answered the question I had (on another thread) about if one can piece hexagons like you demonstrated or if one HAD to use the EPP method.

Thank you.
