oh and another thing, about the sewing, do you do a small amount then sew the x's? is that hard to sew on the sewing machine? looks thrifty, frugal , excess scraps used etc,

Yes, I've seen small rugs made like this as well. I made placemats for our breakfast area table, too. I only sew the X once, at the very beginning of the spiral to hold it in place. Then you start at the beginning of the center doing the zigzag.

Wow, can't wait to try this. Looking for the clothes line rope. OK, when you run short, what do you do to add a new piece?

I'd just do a straight stitch across the two ends back and forth several times to hold them together, then use a good bit of glue when wrapping those ends.
