How to Make a Fabric Postcard

10 Attachment(s)
Materials:

Peltex 72 - a 2-sided fusible stiff interfacing.
Fabric scraps
Sharpie marker or pen
Steam-a-Seam fusible or whatever you use

Materials

Instructions:

Cut peltex interfacing 4 x 6"
Cut background fabric 4 x 6
Cut light colored fabric for back of postcard 4 x 6

Draw out shapes on scrap paper. Trace shapes onto fusible.

Iron shapes onto back of fabric scraps

Cut 4 x 6 background fabric (black), cut 4 x 6" piece of peltex (middle), Cut 4 x 6 light colored fabric for address side (white)

Lightly iron background fabric to one side of peltex. Don't press too hard as other side of peltex will stick to ironing board

Cut shapes out and iron to background. Stitch down (optional). Use a light colored bobbin thread so it doesn't show on backside of peltex.

Iron light colored fabric onto back of peltex. Now you can press firmly adhering all together.

Stitch around edge of postcard to finish.

Draw details on back of card. Draw a line down the middle to separate address side/message side.

All done! You made your first postcard.

This card requires a 65 cents to mail. If you put it in a clear envelope, you must put the stamp on the outside of the clear envelope. The post office will have to hand cancel the envelope. You can also slip it into a regular white envelope and mail that way. I do not put embellishments that stick up on my postcards. I don't want to be responsible for breaking a machine at the post office.

Nice tutorial CookieZenmilk. Should help give other people some good information. And, your pictures are wonderful. I do mine this way (for the most part) as well. Hope you don't mind, I posted a link in the September Postcard Swap to here.

Thanks! I have some of the printed post card backing that I have never used(but always plan to). It has the mailing info printed on one side and fusible on the other. Don't remember the brand...will have to dig it out!

Armylady2012 09-19-2016 05:47 AM

Nice tutorial CookieZenmilk. I use peltex myself and love how it is fusible.

Quilty-Louise 09-19-2016 06:36 AM

CookieZenmilk was the monthly postcard hostess on another
website years ago.

LOVED the "wacky" holiday themes that we would get to pick
from.

IF I can locate the pictures of the ones I made (and received),
will post some other ideas.

I will post in the "general chit chat" section.

bibi 09-19-2016 06:54 AM

Thanks for the post card tutorial! I love your pumpkin bag thread catcher. I think a clear envelope would look cute. I love this idea for using up my tiny scraps!

Great cards Cookie, they really get the brain to thinking. I love the Halloween one. It's a hoot. lol And, the song one is really spot on and the I can't believe how spot on you got the fortune cookie one to look.

Great tutorial. My friend, Bonnie Sable, wrote a book, years vack on these. Your tutorial gives quick good instructions.

i have another method for finishing off the edges of my fabric postcards. it gives it a colorful look. tutorial to follow:

i iron steam-a-seam fusible on the back of my fabric.

i then cut 3/4" strips

i cut two 6" long strips and two 4" strips

i then fold them in half lengthwise. if the fusible backing paper comes off, great...take it all off.

now go to ironing board with your postcard and butt the edge of the postcard

and iron it carefully to the front, don't burn your fingers. turn postcard over and iron to the back.

do this on all sides

and you are done. no need to stitch it down.

this is the front of the postcard.

I think it is a great way to finish a fabric postcard.

K-Roll 02-09-2017 11:54 PM

Beautiful. And edgy! Thanks much. I like a wrapped look.

(When I first joined a PC swap & Judith sent me a postcard, I almost fainted at the perfection of her edges, satin stitch.)

CookieZenmilk 02-10-2017 05:20 PM

i like the satin stitch too. sometimes i get lazy and i just straight stitch or zigzag. anything goes really. no rules.

lynnie 02-12-2017 04:38 PM

i make shaker box postcards. i follow the above directions, but i put a layer of clear plastic, you get it at Joanns by the table cloth fabrics. I get different glitters from the party store, this time, happy birthday, and sew along all the edges to keep glitter inside. They are cute, and different than most postcards. I did birthday this year, and I'll do Christmas this year too. I'm starting now to get a jump on it.

Fizzle 06-15-2017 04:23 AM

Fun tutorial! Very nice! Like Lynnie I like to add things like glitter, buttons, or sequins and mark the envelope (Hand Cancel).
