Just a little bit about Thread Painting
 

If you want to add some wow to your art pieces then thread painting is a skill you should master. The only "rule" is you need a non woven stabilizer. Most shops carry this and if you ask the help, they will steer you to the right product.
So this little piece is how I "painted" a leaf in a current piece. The veins are stitched first a reference. Then each colour is stitched in. I usually start with the lighter shades first. Threads over lap. This is what blends them. And I finish all my pieces with a satin stitched edging. I find it crisps up the work.
I think embroidery threads are a must. they add a sheen and stand up to the needle work. How could you not produce something lovely when your threads have names like Orange Meringue, Golden Harvest, Cream Yellow and Deep Gold. Enjoy!

These leaves are beautiful, MK - you do start with some fabrics, and then add the detail with the thread, right? They turn out very cool.

It's absolutely beautiful. Love the tute! My problem is I can never stay within the lines. I've always colored outside the box. I may try this on a small piece like a layer cake!

Beautiful! I took a thread painting class years ago when my kids were small. (They are grown with teenagers, so you can imagine how long ago that was!) I haven't done any thread painting for a long time. After seeing your beautiful piece, I am inspired to try it again.

Do you do the machine appliqué first? Do you also use a light weight batting? If so, thread painting after machine appliqué and then add the batting and quilt? Thanks so much. I am so confused.

Some times for all your questions. My fabric/cartoon applique is almost always fused. If its small then it will be done on the full piece ie fabric+batting+stabilizer/stiffener. If its large I either do it directly onto the background only with no batting only stabilizer OR I do it off the piece and cut it out and apply it to the backing with either invisible thread of a complimentary thread colour. There is no fixed formula. A large piece wastes the batting if you do it on the quilt sandwich, and I use left over pieces of cotton batting from my quilts constructions.

Just beautiful work!! I was mostly surprised reading the stem is applied first as a reference point as I would've used the stem last as a final focal point so I'll have to try your version as it's exceptional! Fabulous tut! TFS!
