The pictures are great. I am making my first quilt. Can you address how stitch the binding around the corners? Thanks:)

costumegirl 05-23-2010 07:28 PM

Thanks for the info!! :)

GladGrams 05-24-2010 01:11 AM

For once I am feeling successful! This is the way I always do hems on things or bindings. I taught a young woman at class how to do it and she immediately fell in love with not being able to see the stitches. :D

I've done a little pictorial to help you with those corners.
Part One:

Sew up to this point

Fold this up to corner and start sewing along the next side for about 1\u0094.

Push the needle back between the layers to the corner again

I've done a little pictorial to help you with those corners.
Part Two:

After it is secured, I take my scissors and tuck it in under the corner.

do an extra tacking stitch in corner and half way down the part you tucked.

Part Three:

Continue using the Ladder Stitch until the next corner and repeat.

ann clare 05-25-2010 09:48 AM

Very clear instructions. Thanks

nanna 05-25-2010 05:15 PM

THANKS! Perfect timeing. I'm putting binding on a quilt for grandaughter's 18th birthday-TOMORROW. Now I think I will have it ready in time.

craftybear 05-28-2010 05:28 PM

thanks for the tutorial

Ritzquilts 05-29-2010 12:27 PM

you can touch a iron really light to the binding to so it stays back...I use w/n so the batting can be iron...But if using poly, just give the binding a light touch or shot of steam, this way I don't need to fuss with pins, etc.

craftybear 05-29-2010 12:59 PM

wow, just saw the other pictures for the tutorial on here, thanks again

That's a great tip. Actually with this method I never have to use pins or clips. An iron would be helpful for the corners if you happen to be by one at the time. I'm usually sitting on the couch and watching a movie and can't be bothered to get up!
Happy binding!

Ritzquilts 05-29-2010 06:45 PM

I iron it right as I get done sewing it on and it stays pretty good, corners and all

Teacup 06-01-2010 03:19 AM

Thanks for these instructions. I tried this stitch and I really like it! My bindings never look very good. The ladder stitch gave me the best results I've had yet.

So glad you love this method as much as I do! It's the best!

MNQuilter 06-01-2010 05:59 AM

I glue baste my binding down and I just used this method after I remembered it, about halfway into my second table runner and oh boy did it make it go faster! Love it! Thank you!

applique 06-10-2010 03:03 PM

This is also the stitch I use for hand applique! Just use tiny little stitches. Looks like a running stitch on the back of the background!

Me too! I've been doing some Dresden Plate blocks and it works like a charm! I've even repaired clothing and furniture with this stitch. :D

beachlady 06-12-2010 03:28 AM

Just took a quilt to my quilter yesterday - now I will use your method of binding when I get it back. Had not seen this tutorial before, so thank you very much!!!!

lfw045 06-12-2010 06:56 AM

I don't know. I tried this stitch instead of my regular blind stitch on a quilt binding and it came loose. I know I did it right but it sure didn't hold for me. I went back to my blind stitch

Quilt4u 06-12-2010 07:00 AM

Thanks

Did you use quilting thread? Reg. thread isn't strong enough. Sorry it didn't work for you.

PMY in QCA-IL 06-12-2010 08:43 PM

I've been using this for applique for a long time - taught this method at my guild and most people caught on to the method quickly. Even demo'd it using red thread to applique pastel pink to white and no one could see the red thread (on the right side at least!) Do use it for binding, but do like to pin and don't have the "ladders" as long as in the photos.

JudyNH 06-14-2010 06:27 PM

Super!!! - best pics I've seen of this technique

I don't remember what this stitch was called in the 1950's when I was in high school, but it is how we were taught to hem a garment.

Your first stitch is parallel to the stitching that was used to put your binding on. It goes between the backing and the front.

When you go to the left to make your stitch in the binding, it goes between the two layers of fabric in the binding. Then the next stitch is the same as the first, etc. After you have made two or three ladders and you pull your thread, the stitches won't show because they are between layers of fabric.

I used blue thread to help you see it better. Once the ladders are pulled you can see why it's invisible as the blue thread doesn't show up in the green binding.

Hope this helps!

I wasn't getting it either until I saw this- It is no nice that everybody here is so supportive and helpful. I don't think anybody would ever say you over stepped. :) Thanks to both of you who just made binding my quilts easier. It has become a chore for me. Not anymore!!!!

hobo2000 08-10-2010 10:03 AM

Thats what I always have done but didn't know it was called a ladder stitch. Looks so good when finished.

champagnebubbles 09-01-2010 11:53 AM

Wow I like it

Laura1557 11-03-2010 12:21 PM

This is wonderful! I'm doing my first quilt binding and this stitch is working like a charm!

(Which is logical. Because half the quilt is charm squares. :D )

It's faster than the blind stitch I use for appliqué, and just as invisible!

mmonohon 11-07-2010 11:30 PM

Thank you. I was taught that stitch when I was five by my aunt and never knew the name. Now everyone asks what stitch it is and I can tell them (only 35 years later. lol).

Val in IN 11-14-2010 07:52 AM

I tried this method last night on a wall hanging. I'm totally converted! I'll never go back to the other methods I've used. This was SO much better and absolutely invisible. thanks for the great tutorial!! :)

You are welcome! So glad you are a "convert"! I feel the same way, it's sooooo much faster than the other way of doing binding.
Happy Quilting!

Great tutorial ~ boy do I need all the help I can get when it comes to binding

Lilrain 11-15-2010 08:49 AM

This is the way I do bindings, and thought it was the way everyone did it to hide stitches, but found out different!

That is the stitch i have always used for my binding and when i do QAYG I use the same stitch. I have never had a problem with it but I double my thread. I will have to try it with quilting thread instead.

Lindsey 01-14-2011 06:22 PM

This is how I do my binding too ... Thanks for the tip on using a lighter thread. I am doing black on black with black thread and it is really hard to see. so, I think i'll try a little lighter thread.
