I'm still learning, so anything is new to me. :) What kind of needle do you use to hand bind?

I like to use a nice medium size sharp. Just go to your local quilt shop and ask for advice. They will love to help!

These are the one's I'm currently using.

Thank you for the wonderful instructions and the pics. Now I understand how to do this stitch. I love hand applique and will try it on my next one. The pics were very helpful, thanks for taking the time and sharing with us.

I'm still not understanding. I guess I'm just slow this evening. I get the first picture, I think. I have sewn by binding to the front of my quilt and I have run the needle through the edge of it leaving a tail between the layers of the quilt. The 2nd picture is the one i don't get, is the blue thread suppose to be between the layers also and you just had it on top so we could see? I think it's a super idea if I can just understand where to stitch and how. Thanks

When you start to make your ladders, the stitches go between the layers on the quilt . When you make your stitch in the binding put the needle in right at the fold then go back and make a stitch between the layers of the quilt. Do this a few times until you have a few ladders, then gently pull your thread. When you pull your thread, the ladders will disappear.

Maybe these pictures will help

the ladders before you pull them

Janie, your pictures are very helpful. Any chance you'd take more? Pictures of the whole process would be wonderful!!
