This is a great project to work on in between the larger ones. Instant gratification, and a GREAT way to clean out all the small bits of leftovers. Saw one made all in Christmas fabrics -- very stunning.

I use lots of fabric sizing prior to cutting and then again during pressing when I am working with bias cuts.

Yep -- LOTS of fabric sizing would take care of the problem. I wouldn't recommend trying without it.

Okay, this is one I can do, only because I need a few simple projects in my life right now. Thank you!

sawsan 02-04-2013 05:01 AM

Just GREAT. Thank u

This Missouri Star Quilt Company video shows the same technique using jelly rolls (WOF). You could cut your own strips/scraps too and make any size blocks!

What would the opinion from the group be, if you used a muslin foundation piece in sewing the strips together would it make the quilt too heavy, with using say Warm and Natural batting with backing?

Would it be better just to use a lot of sizing as suggested by a couple of the other members said?

It is simple and I have never used fabric sizing :)

carslo 02-04-2013 12:08 PM

I have made 12 of these quilts without any foundation piece or sizing or spray starch. I have not had trouble with the bias going wonky and I use only scraps not precuts. I have used Warm and Natural, Bamboo, and polyester battings I like the nature fibers over the poly. I hope that helps.

String qults are so terrific...but I think I went about it the wrong way...I sewed my strips together...sandwiched it with cotton batting and flannel...and cut the blocks out..thinking I would sew the sandwiched sqs together, kinda like a quilt as you go...but I think I messed up...any ideas to what I can do which what I have created?? I really could use some advise..my sqs are about 15x15..alot of fabric and alot of time invested. Thanks for any advise that comes my way.

shasta5718 02-07-2013 08:13 AM

how did you mess up? now you just need to proceed with sashing to join the squares , as in quilt as you go so the sashing is on both sides.........you will have a fine scrappy quilt, and the next time do it the way the instructions say. i would not attempt to cut up the blocks you have made, too messy. does this help?

mimiknoxtaylor 02-08-2013 01:44 AM

Great tute! Thanks. May have to make this an on going project. Actually just made a similar block in the Craftsy 2012 BOM

fivepaws 02-19-2013 10:59 AM

Thanks for the tutorial. Even more interesting than a string quilt.

EdieClay 02-21-2013 05:38 PM

Love this quilt. I just finished my first scrappy string quilt and got hooked. It was soooo much fun. I was searching in all my totes for more scraps. I am going to make some more. It was fun not to have to worry so much about matching seams.

[QUOTE=Elaine433;5812853]I found that same pattern by another name a year ago. It called for cutting all the strips in different widths or just using up scraps. I made this quilt for my DIL last year for Christmas. If I can figure how to, I will post a picture.

I love the black sashing with the brights.

Elaine already suggested using sashing strips to connect these together. You can use a 1" sashing strip on both sides and not have to do anything with the batting, although one tut I saw recommended using the tape to attach the batting pieces together.

If you want to attach the pieces together without sashing strips, you'll need to cut off the excess batting before sewing them together, or just after.

Thanks for the directions. I hate using paper or muslin. This is what I was looking for.

KittyD 07-24-2013 12:47 PM

Since you are using different size strips, I'm assuming the only matching you have to do is in the center? Great looking quilt and a great way to get rid of scraps.

MacThayer 08-28-2013 01:41 PM

Great way to use up scraps, which I seem to have an excess of already. Can't bear to throw fabric out! Thanks for such a helpful and fun tutorial!
