Composition books have not changed size forever. Plus they have a hard cover. So I chose them to cover in quilted fabric. I have given so many of these as gifts because I can find fabric in a favorite color or a subject that they enjoy.

I have written this so you can start with one fat quarter. I am normally making more than one so I start with yardage. I have included the zipper pocket but you can choose not to do that.

Cut your fat quarter so you have one piece 12 by long width of fat quarter. Cut a pocket lining from the remain strip 12 x 6, Cut binding strips 1 1/2 wide and join them together. Quilt the 12 x WOF piece or main piece of your BUB Notice on the photo with the things needed, that there is a white chalk mark outside of the feather pattern. That is actually an outline of the composition book opened. I can't use this for my sewing measurements. A book is longer around it when it is closed.

Sew the binding strips to the short edges of your quilted piece. Fold it around the edge and stitch in the ditch to secure the binding. It is not clean finished on t.he inside. . Also turn under a quarter inch on the long side (12) of the pocket

I used a 9 zipper. Place the right side of the BUB as it is right side up onto the zipper tape and topstitch it to the zipper. Put the finished edge of the pocket on the right side tape of the zipper and topstitch it on.

Turn the pocket around the zipper tape . There are those areas above and below the zipper where things could come out of the pocket. I have put a piece of cardboard to show you how and where I sew to make sure these holes are closed. I know I have not sewn the bottom of the pocket to the quilted piece yet. Don't

With the Nice side of the BUB up put the composition book down centering over your pattern. The edges of the quilted piece that you put the binding on form the facing . Fold the edges into the compostion book. Yes you are seeing the wrong side of the quilting. It is OK. I put a pin top and bottom on the two folds . Now I can unfold the facing that contains the pocket and sew the bottom of the pocket so that my seam is hitting the edge of the pocket and is between the pins that mark the fold and the zipper.

The little piece of cardboard is where you would sew the bottom of the pocket.

Now refold those facing areas back again at the pins that are marking them I mark lines 10 inches apart on the facings and sew these lines on the facings only. You can put your book on the cover to help find where you want to draw the first line. I draw it with my long ruler. Look at the top fo the photo, you can see lines on the facing. Measure 10 inches down to get the lines for the other side of the facing. Then sew these four lines on the facing only.

To grade the seams, cut off the corner at an angle. Then only cut the facing to 1/4. Leave the excess on the main body of the BUB. WHAT IF YOU USED LESS THAN 12 INCHES FOR WIDTH. The top and bottom folded in may peak out so fuse it down.
