This is how I make my hexes. First (in my case) I cut a 3 inch strip of fabric, fold in half to make a 1.5 inch strip.Put a piece of tape on my triangle ruler 1.5 inches from tip. Place triangle on folded strip (folded edge toward me). Cut on both sides of triangle. This gives me a hexie shape. Attach fabric to card stock (punch a hole in cars stock). Fold fabric over edges of paper, wip stich at corners (no need to remove stiches) Aftersewing remove pin. When hexie are sewn together you may carefully remove paper. I use pointed tweezers , paper can be reused several times.

Great tute. Thanks for sharing.

BeeNana 05-27-2011 07:55 AM

Great technique. Thanks
I usually use freezer paper and then iron on the back of the fabric.
I can see this would be a great way to cut the freezer paper.......

Thank you...you have made this look so easy...

Thank you for this great tute :D:D:D

This looks like a great way to do your hexies. Everyone has their own way it seems. I cut 2.5 in. squares of fab. pin the paper hex to it, chop off the 4 corners, then baste as you do. I also want to try the freezer paper method at some point in time. Thanks for the tute.

Thanks. Great tutorial

SherriB 05-27-2011 03:36 PM

Thank you for this tutorial! I hope to someday try hexagons and this looks like it will be easy to follow.

OHSue 05-27-2011 07:52 PM

Thanks so much for this. Love EPP and I really like the way you cut your hexies.
How big is your finished hex?

gaby4v 05-27-2011 09:07 PM

Thanks for the tute. I've just googled for a good method to make a GFG quilt. I like yours the best. Thanks.

LindaR 05-28-2011 05:25 AM

basically this is the way I did mine but used the plastic hexes from Brandy that come in a package of 25...I don't take out the basting stitches either. When I remove the plastic hexes I spray starch the finished flower so that it is stable...good take/a/long project

GREAT tute !! Thanks !!

How very clever. Thanks for sharing.

GrammaBabs 05-28-2011 06:22 AM

I've pondered this one... and you've streamlined it to where i just might do it... thank you...

I'd like to mention one small trick: punching a hole in the middle of the paper is best done before the fabric is stitched around the paper. :)

are you just whip stitching the corners? And how are you joining the hexes together after doing that? Are you using a ladder stitch or something similar? And is this all done by hand? Thanks, just trying to understand as I really want to do one of these. Sorry for all the questions.

ccthomas 05-28-2011 09:22 AM

Do you hand stitch each of the hexagons together or hand stitch? I don't see any stitching.

Joanne9of12 05-28-2011 09:42 AM

Thanks for sharing. Up until now, I've been basting and then removing my stitches. I've got to try this!

pmintpat 05-28-2011 10:09 AM

Lately, I have been very interested in starting a GFG project. This tute is a great way showing how to cut the fabric. And I see how it can be used to cut the paper hexes. But how do you calculate the size of the paper hex?

Patchworkmarion 05-28-2011 11:18 AM

Thank you.

gramquilter2 05-28-2011 11:35 AM

This is a great technique for making hexagons. I don't remove the basting stitches which does make the work move along faster. Am going to try your method.

arizonagirl 05-28-2011 01:26 PM

Wow you really simplified this. In the past I would never have considered doing this pattern, but this makes it much easier to do.

jojosnana 05-28-2011 03:13 PM

Wow, a lot easier that what I was doing. Thanks for sharing.

rona thickpenny 05-28-2011 11:00 PM

Another wonderful idea, thankyou.

kathymarie 05-29-2011 06:09 AM

What a great tute....thanks for sharing. I've stayed away from english paper piecing and tried to sew them by hand...not always the flattest, nicest method for me. I'll try this for sure.

Grandma Peg 05-29-2011 04:25 PM

Will have to try this someday.

Corky 05-29-2011 10:07 PM

I never thought of folding the strip to cut it that way. Thanks!!

Your ideas work fine but let me make a couple of suggestions that will help.
1. Use card stock to make your hexes (I use 90-110 weight). It's a bit expensive but well worth it in the long run.
2. Definitely punch holes in hexes before you use them.
3. I use a chopstick to remove them. I don't have to worry about cutting the fabric or punching thru it.

By the way. . . You are doing an awesome job. I've included a picture of the 1" hexes that I'm working on currently by way of example.
