Some of you wanted to know how to do an over the top feather. Here is my interpretation. I hope you can understand the drawings.
I recommend using an air erasable pen to draw your feathers first. In the beginning, it's much easier to sew with somthing to follow.

I begin with a spine to follow and then continue on with the feathers. The red color shows where to go over the top of the previous feather and then continue in the same manner until you reach the beginning of the spine. Then I follow the spine closely back to the first feather and start the feathers on the opposite side.

I made another drawing to show that you can shape your spine anyway you want and the red in the drawing shows where I meet the last feather to the beginning of my spine.

I hope these instructions make sense, If they don't, post questions and I will try to make them more clear.

Thanks Jackie!
Does this now mean that my stuff will look as pretty as yours? :) :)

jacquemoe 06-14-2009 06:02 PM

If you PPP, lol. Actually, sketching a design over and over again really helps before you hit the machine. You are too cute, Terri. {{hugs}}

I've bookmarked it too. I'll begin practicing tomorrow, after work.

beachlady 06-15-2009 04:10 PM

Think I will ever be good enough to do that Jackie. You are so talented!!!

sandpat 06-17-2009 03:52 PM

Thanks for the tute Jackie! I'm a little late finding it, but did. I've actually done them this way before and its lot of fun. The thing I struggle with the most is that I often try to "stand" up my feathers too much. I need to get back to practice, practice, practice! When I grow up I wanna be able to quilt like you

JoanneS 06-17-2009 08:44 PM

I just found this today ! Better late than never :D :D I have it bookmarked so when I'm ready to practice, I can get going. Thank you, thank you, thank you. By now, Terri is way ahead of me

Thank you, Jackie: Yesterday I practiced your technique...doesn't LOOK like yours but I believe what you say that practice will help so I'll keep practicing. I have my 20 inch square "quilt" sandwich pieces covered in all the quilting patterns I've practiced on...I can tell there is SOME improvement...not alot but SOME! Thanks.

jacquemoe 07-02-2009 07:11 AM

You are more than welcome. I mentioned to Melissa that all the practice doesn't have to go to waste. I'd sandwich as many squares as you want to practice on and then put them together like a rag quilt. Practice quilting only up to about 1/2" from the edges. You'll have a great utility quilt and a sample of your designs. I'd love to see one of these finished. Makes me want to try one :)

mgshaw 07-04-2009 12:15 PM

I am still practicing!!! I moved up to a big practice piece, the width of the fabric by about a yard & 1/2. This way I am getting a better feel of moving a lot of fabric around. I did tons of little squares, now the big ones are whole different ballgame!!!! I have been drawing lines to mimic borders, sashings and blocks. I think (maybe) after a couple more big practice pieces, I might try a quilt!!!

pollyjvan9 03-29-2010 05:28 AM

I just found this tutorial yesterday and so impatient to try it. I have been FMQ almost since I started piecing 5 years ago. I have gotten good enough to please myself ( I don't enter in shows or fairs) but I have been yearning to quilt feathers. I have read many articles and I think your instructions and pics are very clear. Thanks so much.

ann clare 04-20-2010 09:16 AM

Thank you for this clear tutorial. I just need to practice. practice, practice now.
