Quick and Easy Coaster

Here is a really quick, fast and easy way to make a coaster. Take 5 different pieces of fabric 5 inches square ( or use 5 charm pieces). Lay the piece that you want to be the back right side up. Fold the 4 remaining pieces in half vertically. Place them on the bottom square with the raw edges matching the outside edge of the back piece. Go around the square like you fold a box top. When you come to the last piece, tuck part of it under piece number 1.
Note: An alternative way is to fold the 4 remaining pieces diagonally and then place them around the square the same way with raw edges matching raw edges of bottom square.
Pin in place and then sew a 1/4 inch seam all around the outside. Check the back to make sure that you caught each piece in the seam. Turn right side out, press and Voila...a coaster. I like to sew around the outside edge after I turn it right side out but not required. I think this would be a great way to use up scraps of fabric with different themes like Christmas, fall, spring, patriotic etc.
There are basically 4 layers of fabric so you shouldn't need batting.
Show me pics when you get yours done.

I have made many of these but not in the triangle method. Here is a picture of what I did.

Since these are hot pads, I used Insulbrite inside and used 9" squares. I also made key rings and CHRISTmas ornaments. For the ornaments and key rings I used 4" squares to begin with. I LOVE your triangle method. Thanks for the great tutorial

lauriejo 11-08-2013 06:01 AM

These are so fun to make, but I have not tried the triangle method either! I also really like the rounded corners. I guess I need to make some more!

mjhaess 11-08-2013 06:22 AM

That is cute....

nwm50 11-08-2013 06:41 AM

Love making coasters but yours are more darling looking! Will have to try this and thanks for the tutorials!

mimiknoxtaylor 11-08-2013 06:51 AM

Thanks, I've too have made these with the squares but will try the triangles too.

madamekelly 11-08-2013 08:15 AM

I have made these, but I make a small starburst design in the center so they stay together and protect the insulbrite, during the wash. I make the "star" with embroidery thread.

I did these as a make and take years ago at the fair using hand crank sewing machines. We all had so much fun and then I heard later how many of them went on to sew other things. A great beginner activity.

Try doing one in a circle using a cd as a pattern.

Nice variation! Thanks for the tute!

craftymatt2 11-08-2013 03:19 PM

So cute, thank you for sharing, these will be cute gifts.

love this idea - so simple and easy for teacher & bus driver gifts....thank you so much!

kathyd 11-08-2013 06:15 PM

Great idea. I hadn't thought of doing larger squares w/insulbrite for hotpads!

I have made these using Christmas fabric. Great for a small "happy" for neighbors, etc. Also, they fit nicely on the bottom of a wine glass. You can actually fit the wine glass (stemware) bottom by starting at one side and swirling it until it is covered. Then is becomes a wine glass charm! Will attempt to add picture.

I have made dozens of these and they really work well too. I have never done the top stitching and they have still held up really well so that would just be a personal preference.

Thanks for the tutorial. I've made dozens and dozens of these. I love the fact that you don't have to either mess with binding or hand stitch an opening left for turning. I often make them from quilt scraps to coordinate the décor ... bedroom or living rooms.

I've even made them on a much larger scale and use them as "appliance sliders". I do use the top stitching for the larger ones.

Here are some ... for bread machine, stand mixer, blender and toaster ...

Thanks everyone for adding on to my post. I will try out the circle ones using a CD as a pattern and for sure I know some friends who use stemmed glasses. They will be getting some coasters for Christmas for they and their guests. So great to get all the ideas everyone shares.

bonniemanley 11-10-2013 10:55 AM

I have made them also. They are additive. Never tried the triangle tho. Will see if I can do that one. Thanks for posting.

very cute,thanks for the tute

nygal 11-13-2013 07:32 AM

Thanks for posting this! A picture says a thousand words!

Chasezzz 11-20-2013 04:11 AM

I have done the one with the triangles as Christmas tree ornaments...just add a loop of ribbon with the ends on the corner under the folded triangles.

SandyinZ4 11-20-2013 05:41 PM

Chasezzz, that would be good for little tiny squares of fabric. I will try it. Thanks so much!

Evelynquilts 11-21-2013 05:06 AM

Thanks for the tut...I have also made these with 5 inch squares... the onlt thing I did different was to put batting....now you gave me an idea to make hot pads...Thanks :)

KalamaQuilts 11-21-2013 05:58 AM

I always put a 5" square of warm and natural batting in mine.

Very nice tutorial, well done.

audsgirl 11-21-2013 01:35 PM

I had not seen the one using triangles. They are pretty cute! It would be a great way to use up extra charm squares. Thanks for the lesson.

Lots of variations. Thanks for sharing.

judykay 12-30-2013 06:09 PM

Very nice. I use this same tecnique to make coasters to fit on the bottom of my wine glasses. No more rings on my tables, I slip them on the glasses before my guests arrive and each one is different so everyone knows what glass is there's.

annieshane 01-01-2014 12:33 PM

I have made both of these, but everyone seems to like the triangles better. I also catch the center with embroidery threads or very small flat buttons. Add that little extra touch. Great gifts and they pair really well with coordinating fabrics and the project of the month (fabric bowl). Everyone loves them!

Painiacs 01-01-2014 10:47 PM

Love triangle idea!!

GrannieAnnie 01-02-2014 09:07 AM

I've made probably 50 or so of these (straight) this fall. Beyond easy. I'll have to do a few of the triangle ones, too. But I don't sew around the edge, just press good.
