Thanks for the tute.

klgreene 11-21-2010 02:58 PM

Thanks for the tute, I haven't done machine applique yet, haven't built up the guts, but will try. Thanks again.

amma 11-21-2010 03:32 PM

Excellent tute sharon!! Thank you :D:D:D

sewTinker 11-21-2010 03:54 PM

I love peeking in to see how everyone does things. Thanks for letting me watch over your shoulder. :-)

Thank you!

Thank you!

A woman who owns a quilting store showed me & I use this method all the time - straight stitch around the applique several times & it shows up great! Took some practice & I still wobble sometimes but I love it for setting off my appliques. I believe it's called raw edge applique

ReeneeD 11-23-2010 06:55 AM

Thanks for taking the time to give us that great tutorial.
Just so happens I am doing some applique right now. I am going to try it.

Sandra-P 11-23-2010 07:20 AM

Thank you for sharing. Great pictures, easy to follow, nice job.

Margie 11-23-2010 04:43 PM

OK...I know I am going to sound dumb...but I am confused. I thought raw edge applique referred to sewing inside the edge of the applique and letting the edges have a "raveled" look? I thought this method was just applique using heat and bond instead of turning under? Will the edges of this ravel then?

SewinNancy 11-23-2010 05:13 PM

Thanks for the great tutorial sharon.

quilter53 11-23-2010 07:41 PM

Do the edges not fray when you do it by hand and not turn it under? I have always done machine applique and want to learn the hand but am a little nervous not to turn the edges under.

milikaa1 11-23-2010 10:08 PM

Thank you for posting this, I am getting ready to try an applique, this does not make it seem so bad.

The type you are talking about you just lay down the applique and sew it down - it will fray. This one with the heat n bond and stitches will not fray

You can do this type by hand without turning under and it will not fray because of the heat n bond . One of the other ways by hand with turned under edge is needle turn - that I haven't figured out yet  LOL

sharon b 11-23-2010 10:34 PM

The heat n bond stops the fraying

Peggi 11-24-2010 03:40 AM

on raw edge you do sew inside the applique & I have even used it on quilts that have been washed several times. I do sew very close to the edge tho'. I just love the contrast effect.

Kimmy P 11-24-2010 08:42 AM

Ok, I am new to quilting, so my dumb question is what is a "pressing sheet" and where can you get one?

sharon b 11-24-2010 02:20 PM

Pressing sheet or teflon sheet - you can get them from Joanns ( that is where I got mine) in the aisle with the rolled/ packaged interfacing/ stabilzer . used the 50 % off and it was like 4.50

Terricat 11-27-2010 02:57 PM

Sharon, do you use the buttonhole stitch most of the time? I've done a lot of this type of applique with a close zig-zag, but I'm finding I really prefer the finished look of the buttonhole stitch.

sheilajstewart 11-28-2010 05:09 AM

Many thanks Sharron for the tute and the pressing sheet info.I use a piece of cloth but I am going to get that sheet

sharon b 11-28-2010 02:17 PM

Terri I have never been able to get my zig zag stitch to adjust well to do applique so I use the two stitches that I began with the most

BETTY62 12-25-2010 11:57 PM

Your applique tutorial was great and easy for me to follow. I have been wanting to learn applique for quite some time and feel that by following your directions I have the tools I need to give it a go. Thanks a million.

I don't quite understand why you're using glue if you're using Heat 'n Bond? I've only done an applique once, a machine applique, NOT raw edge, so I don't really understand the process too well....

So you are saying if you use the wonder under you dont have to fold edges in on applique piece? I bought some premade dresdan plates and wanted to applique but wasnt sure if I need to turn edges down - this seem soooo much easier thanks for tute Ihave bookmarked!!

When she said put the applique with the glue side down she meant there is a sticky side or glue side to the Heat n Bond. Maybe this is what you are asking about.

quilter53 02-19-2011 06:43 AM

I have used Steam a Seam 2. The edges won't fray they say and I haven't had any problem so far. Also, I saw on Fons and Porter where they cut out the applique and then trim the middle of the paper pattern out and leave only the edge to cover the edge of the applique so it won't be so stiff after sewing it down. Hope this makes since.
