Hi Rhonda! I have been trying to learn to quilt on my own by trial and error and reading books and watching youtube tuts over this past year. I don't know anyone who quilts. My HST's are never right and I have cut little squares and then cut on the diagonal and then sewn them together! It has been so hard and tedious but I have kept trying, thinking there must be and easier way. I have had such a hard time measuring and cutting. I found your tut tonight and can't wait to try your method tomorrow or as soon as I can. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to help others to learn to do this!! Thank you so much.

I have another thread about trouble shooting when making HSTs and sewing them. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-23252-1.htm |
Rhonda thanks very much. I cannot believe how quick the top method is a NO WASTE - wow.
Bookmarked for future  |
I really like this tutorial. I have a rotary cutter but I not sure how to use it to cut fabric. I tried a few times, but I keep cutting the fabric to small.

It is also easier to cut with a rotary cutter as far using a template is concerned if you have a mini mat you can turn as you cut out the square or on a rotating mat. I suggest you practice on copy paper. I use copy paper in place of fabric when I want to practice a technique. It's cheap and it can be sewn and ironed just like fabric. - |
The great thing about this method is you don't have to buy anything to make accurate HSTs. I hate to spend money when I don't have to.
Cut strips and sew them together and cut out your HSTs with a template. How easy is that? |
I like the 'no waste' in this technique! :)
|
Couldn't this be accomplished with using a Quilt Cut cutting system instead of a template? I would give it a try but mine hasn't arrived yet. Ann in TN

Fantastic, Can't wait to do these myself. Great Job! :O)

Oh WOW, That's so neat. I'm gonna use these steps for sure.
You are really smart. Thanks for showing the way. |
Great tutorial, the Boston Blocks were the tough ones for me, but reading/watching your tutorial makes it easier, quick & no worries. I will definitely try out your Boston Block technique.
Thanks! |
Thank you for your great step by step photos. They make your instruction very clear.

A mini cutting mat or a turntable cutting mat would be good. You can cut without a mini but it would make it easier to do. You will need a template of whatever size you are making. If you don't have a template you can cut one from stiff cardboard or template plastic but these will be prone to getting cut. And the corners may not be accurate with cardboard or thin plastic. But you won't have to buy any thing to make your HSTs. No paper piecing or Thangles or any other expense. If you haven't seen my thread then here is my link for free templates. If you need a size other than any of these just let me know. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-36008-1.htm We make these up ahead and then have them on hand for whatever I decide to make. This works well with scraps too. I just make two piles one dark colors and one light and then I take one of each and sew them together and then cut out the square from the center. You can sew them like flags and it goes pretty quick. Then we go back and cut out the squares. Any leftovers can be recycled. Ok here we go. Here is my cut down version for making Half Square Triangles. I used a 2 1/2" template and cut my strips 2 1/2" x 11" This will give you 5 HSTs. Youcan make your strips longer but this works well for me. |
O my gravy...makes you wonder why no one else has thought of this. What a super, super tutorial. Thank you so much. Beckie

I don't like making HST's either since they are so time consuming making, then trimming to size. You've certainly taken all that away with your method. I can't wait to give your method a try since I really DO like HST's (even though I hated making them)!
|
Wow! Awesome tutorial, I'll have to try this; you made it look so easy!
|
Thank you
Ronda
Thank you for the templates. I'm looking for patterns to try them with. Lorie |
Dear Rhonda,
I've ordered your acrylic templates. Will one of them be the size needed to check that my 2" half square triangles are "square". I'm having some trouble when I sew the edges together and I think that my cutting from a pieced strip with a thin plastic template is not working out very accurately so I was hoping I could check their accuracy with your templates? Is there anywhere in these tutorials that you show how to square up hst? Thanks |
Thank you for sharing this great method...will try it on my next quilt for sure :)

I'm self taught at quilting and haven't learned any of theshort cuts, thanks very much for the tut.I'm always amaised at how easy experenced quilters make things look

Thank you, I have seen so many cute patterns with the HST but was scared to try it. I'll give it a try now.

Rhonda, I know you are still out there and I'm hoping you will do another tute on the "Really easy 1/2 square triangle. It's been a long time since Ihave seen it. Could you help? Thanks, peterparley

Rhonda, thank you for your numerous posts regarding your HSTs. This is probably seeming like a full-time job for you! Love how your method uses as much of the fabric as possible. With today's fabric prices, that's important to us all. It's been fascinating to see where all of the posters to this thread hail from...even from across the pond, so to speak. Without QB, so many of us would not have benefitted from your tutorial and tips. Thank you, again!

You're welcome everyone! I enjoy sharing which is what quilting is to me - sharing.
