I printed Vicki's circle & got a diameter of 1 3/4 inch. Am I confused as I thought a 2 inch circle is 2 inches across the diameter? Thanks for replying so I get it right.

montanaquilter 03-25-2010 04:41 PM

i want to make a few keychains also!! can you teach us that next?!! please!!!!

I tried a 1 3/4" and it doesn't work as well as a 2" circle. You can do it with a 1 3/4" but the designs are based more on a 2". the differance is how the quarter circles overlap or connect. They will look slightly farther apart if you use the smaller circle but they will still work.

I recommend the 2" tho but if you want to do it with the 1 3/4" and see how it comes out you can then decide if you would rather have the 2" instead next time.

The one that shows the differance the most would be the one I call the Bowtie. I think it may be the last one in the ones I posted. The quarter circles need to overlap to get the bowtie effect. If the circles are smaller then they barely overlap. Not a problem if that is a look you like. And in the designs where the quarter circles don't connect much it wouldn't be an issue.

I tried it with a 1 1/4" template and it works well but there you get more overlap than I was looking for. It is all in what you want it to look like and you can play around with the two sizes and see what you like.

This may not make sense to you yet. If you don't want to try to make a 2" circle then use the 1 3/4" for now and then come back to this conversation after you have had some practice.

Another thought is when you cut out your circles cut the outer edge of your pen line not on the line or inside the line. You will gain a bit in the size.

I'm sure that can be the next one!! What block are you looking at? or do you have a preference?

Sheila Elaine 03-25-2010 06:01 PM

Thanks Rhonda. I will find something to make the 2 inch with. Just wanted to make sure I didn't do something wrong when I printed. Others might have the same question. TTUL.

DeneK 03-25-2010 06:20 PM

Got my templates today Rhonda. Thanks so much.
I am looking forward to getting started with this. I will be out of town for the weekend, but will get busy next week for sure.

montanaquilter 03-25-2010 06:22 PM

Rhonda---don't have any particular block in mind--i just saw at a bazaar last year that some woman made these tiny block keychains like you do and they were so awesome!! i'm sure your way is going to be easier than her way and i'd LOVE for you to teach us!! so pick whatever you would like us to do

Well if you did what I do you would have to use 1" blocks! LOL but if you can use the 1 1/4" blocks you can do some basic designs in a tiny size. My favorite is the Boston Star which uses my Boston Blocks. But I can come up with some more designs also for variety. It will have to be after the 20th of April as I have to have a good size order ready for the lady in Kalona for their Quilt Festival. So I will shoot for the 23rd of April.

On second thought the Bear's Paw makes a dramatic statement at that size. I might just do that instead. I have been wanting to show how to do miniatures with a Bear's Paw using my cut down method. It is a lot easier than it looks. Remember it is a cut down method so it looks more complicated than it is. What do you think?

Your printer might have kicked the size down. I tried to print them and even though I TOLD the darn printer to print them 100% -- it didn't

Rhonda 03-25-2010 07:44 PM

Here is a free download for circles and it works I tried it.

You can save it to your computer. That is what they tell you to do. It is a free download.

I printed mine and they measured 2" across. They were printed on thick paper. I had to set the printer to "none" in order for them to print the correct size.

I already have my 4 circles cut out and will take my fabric out when I get home from work this afternoon.

Sheila Elaine 03-26-2010 10:14 AM

I remeasured Vicky's link for circles & it is 2 inch. I was looking at the wrong line on the ruler. Sorry about that. Thanks for the assistance, Rhonda.

That's very nice of you but I tell people to think of me if you come across any tiny print cotton scraps.

Thanks for offering!
