I'm actually stuck on this block. Its part of a mystery sampler I am doing. Is it easier to break it up into smaller squares? The very short instructions we were given did not mention it. Granted I am still a new quilted and this was a gift from a family member who thinks way to highly of my skills. Any help would be greatful. I did take it to the quilt shop that it was purchased an I felt very stupid. Sigh... I so want to make my Aunt proud and prove to myself that I can do this.

Thank you Rhonda! Your tutorial from 3 years ago is still helping people. The links you posted to what to do if you have trouble helped me figure out what I've been doing wrong too.
I cut myself a simple little 3 1/2" square template out of 1/8" plywood to match my unfinished block size and used your strip method to cut a couple trial HSTs. I sewed them together and got a nearly perfect point the first try with NO fumbling around. You made it easy to get things right. Thanks, Rodney |

Love this tutorial and the visuals that you have done. It is very well done and very easy to follow. I really like this block! Been looking for a block pattern to use to make a quilt for my oldest granddaughter and think I'll use this one. Thanks again for the tutorial.

You can use this same method of construction with any quilt block that uses this same layout. I make 4 patch squares and use them as a block(unit/section) or HSTs or Bostons or my Star Point blocks. There are any number of HST quilt blocks that have the 6 blocks across by 6 blocks down you see in the layout of the block units above. Or you can make bunch of HSTs and or Bostons or what ever block and sit down at the table and play with them to see what pattern you get when you turn the in differant ways.
BTW all of my pictures here with the exception of the directions for cutting the HSTs were done on my EQ5. Love love love my EQ5!! Hope you will see the possibilities in using this method of construction. Once you have the HSTs or Bostons or whatever made you can use them in any number of quilt blocks!!! Just a great amount of detail. Thanks so much for a couple new ideas. I was recently at a retreat and a friend of mine was using a new tool (to me) called BlocLoc. Anyhow, it has a small groove that you lay along the seam line so the fabric will not move when cutting. Fabulous (I do not represent this company) but her cuts were precise and spot on. I plan to order some as she did very small HSTs and they were perfectly square.

Thanks I love how you do your work. I'm working on a block of month that I ripped out a million times, you said ou could do this for any block size. Thats the hard part to figure out for me. My pattern says cut 1 5/8 squares. So I would cut stips at 1 5/8th or bigger? They have to measure 1 5/8 when done. Also you mean when u press the stirps the seams are open not together going one way? thanks for advice and tutorial!

Omg, this is amazing! I love to sew with triangles. I am definitely going to try this way instead. Right now, I do a lot of precise trimming which is slowly killing my hands.

I have used this half square triangle method, but used bias strips to start with, so i didnt end up with bias on the units outer edges.

Bias has never been a problem for me. I guess I use tacks to keep it in place so no problem with it buckling in the middle or stretching out of place. If you put a pin in the center of the seam that will help also to keep it in place. I never pay any attention to bias.
