Thank you very much for sharing. I cannot add to these as i do not do my own quilting on my quilts. I can use your One Block Wonder master though. I made my own, but can always improve by using yours. Good luck with your new creations.

Thanks for sharing your lovely designs- a bit tricky for me, but a great source of ideas!!

I've now been turning my mind to how to quilt a one block wonder in a less formal way, not in an all over design. Since OBWs tend to have areas of lighter and darker blocks, I think they often look celestial. So I was thinking of how to use quilting done in cosmic swirls for a quilt with a starry look, or breezes and zephyrs for a quilt with a garden like and sunlit look.
I was cruising around the board and found a gorgeous prizewinning quilt made by grandmajuki whose quilting design would apply wonderfully to a OBW as well: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-140282-1.htm  |
I think you are right about an all over, celestial look. I tried some of the individual motifs, and they break up the flow of my one block wonder design. On the other hand, the pattern design in my OBW quilt is so busy that I'm wondering if an overall design will just be lost. The Starry Night quilt you referenced shows up best in the solid dark sections. Still mulling this one over.

What if you were to connect each motiff with a "stem" or vine-type-of-thing? It wouldn't have to be a straight line. Maybe you could change the flower to a leaf that would be on a vine.
|
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try to connect them with a curving line but the individual motifs still looked spotty. Now I'm thinking about stitch in the ditch for the central area to show the detail of all the piecing, then put some machine quilting in the borders which aren't as busy. I'll post a picture when I finish it.

Thanks, I'm bookmarking this!

As I said on page 9, I now think a more free-style all over design is the way to go. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be terrific! I get the red x's too Nantie and another member just wrote to say she does too. Not sure what happened to the pics when the QB changed over. Clearly some folks can see them, which puzzles me. If you still would like to see them, I could email them to you if you PM me. |
this thread is still alive and kicking, Lara!
i just posted a link to it to a thread that shows a Gorgeous OBW that the person asked for quilting suggestions. |
Wow, these ideas are great! I just finished my OBW top and was looking for ideas. "Dixie_fried" linked to your post from mine where I was asking about suggestions for FMQing it. Thank you so much!!!
|
Wow and thanks. This will be so helpful when I finally get to my OBW--I already have the fabric.

I'm totally flabbergasted!! Your designs are beautiful!

So thrilled to see your designs, curious to how you do a design in paint, maybe a tutorial on how you do that if not to difficult to explain. Your designs are so neat and creative, also curious what size hexagon did you use for your template or do you use another method to scale your designs? Thanks again.
|
Hi!
Thank you Lois! quiltingcurious, answering your questions about how to design in paint would be very hard. I couldn't begin to attempt a tutorial, but i did find two web pages from Microsoft that explain the basics very well: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/products/features/paint http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/Using-Paint The more you fool around with it, the quicker you learn. I love Paint, even more than Photoshop Elements, although that is because I haven't learned how to use PE as well yet. I use the copy and paste feature the most, when I have a design with repetitive elements like these templates. I also use Paint to supplement my EQ design software. Its a great tool! You asked what size hexagon I use. The picture in Paint isn't any particular size. If you need a life size pattern to follow, you would scale them when you print the page to fit the size of the hexagons in your One Block Wonder. Before the QB changed over, you could click on the "Download" button under each picture and tranfer it to your computer. That option has for some reason disappeared. I hope this helps you. |
Wow love these designs. Thanks for sharing.

I sure wish I had seen this post before I quilted mine. I was stuck and ended up with quilt in the ditch. It is nice, but it could have been so much nicer.
Your post has given me much to think about when I plan the quilting on my next quilt. Thanks. amh |
Thank you so much for your reply. I will look into the links you posted.
|
Thanks for the info you put on QB in 6/11. Believe I could work with the first template you listed for my SandW quilt. First I need to get a pic on the QB for all to see the top.
|
These designs are wonderful. I have made 6 OBW's and these would have come in handy. I will bookmark for the future. I just know I will do another at some point. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks for the links.

Carrying this post into it's third year...
I am getting ready to make my first OBW quilt. I'm still looking for the perfect fabric for it. These quilting designs are all great and I'm looking forward to trying them out on my long arm. Sometimes when you are quilting a repeat design you can find easier ways to connect designs or ways to give a little change in them every once in a while. Thanks for giving a place to start if not a way to finish. Great work! |
wow-those are wonderful- makes me want to start making obw's just to try out all the quilting designs :D
|
Such a great resource/ Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting these templates. Funny how one topic question can be asked by different people on the same day! I need to remember to use the search button before posting. Thanks again for sharing your ideas.
|
Thanks so much for sharing your lovely ideas! I just pulled out my UFO that's been sitting for awhile waiting for inspiration. Now maybe I will actually finish it!
|
Great ideas! Thank you so much!
|
Thanks for sharing these terrific ideas.
|
I've mae 3 one block wonders and have used template 1 - stitch in the ditch - for all of them -- it does not detract from the fabulous block placement.
|
Wow. Love them.
|
Those are really nice designs you created.
|
Lovely designs. Thank you.

These are so nice. Thank you for sharing.

Those are lovely designs.

Your patterns are great. I've made one Karen Combs hexi quilt, and had the same quandry about quilting. I started looking at stencils and found a couple that were 6 pointed rather than 4 or 8 pointed, so I bought them both. Now they sit with the quilt top waiting to be used. Someday . . . . .
