SID - Don't hate it anymore!
 

This way of doing SID has taught me not to fear or hate it anymore! As many have said: don't look at the needle, look at the foot!
You need a foot for straight stitch - one that has a narrow slot up to the needle hole: (I'm lucky to have a straight stitch plate, too.) You may notice some needle holes on one of the pictures - they were from something else.

This method will work for sewing on either side of the seam and allow you to switch sides while sewing if the "upper" side changes. Place the upper side just even with the slot in the foot:

And off you go! No need to go too slowly, in act that makes me "wibble". Practice a bit and Voila!:

One of our "good" quilters gave us a tutorial at our show on how to SITD when putting the binding on the front, folding it to the back and then STID from the front. She really emphasized that you need to carefully press that binding seam after it has been sewn on the front. That is, press it to the outside, away from the quilt. She said if you get interrupted and can't finish it that day, press again when you come back to it. Later, the binding will relax and the stitching will be hidden.

Good idea to use straight stitch foot for STID. Never thought of doing that, but will be sure to give a try. Thanks for sharing you idea and showing us an example.

I have always thought,heard, read, that you have to use an even feed foot, walking foot, etc. so the quilt layers will feed evenly. Did you have a problem with quilt layers not feeding through together?

Jingle, I'm fortunate to have a Pfaff with the "built-in" walking foot so I never have that problem anymore! And the foot I use is nothing special - just the 1/4" straight stitch foot that came with the machine. (I have used other feet, but you just have to find out what part of the foot to line up with the seam, even if you have to mark it.)
