Square in Square without math.

I told works4me that I'd do picts of this method. Here they are.
I was playing with these leftover pieces last fall when I should have been workin' on my DGSons's Solar System quilt. :) When DDIL gits pregnant again I'll use these blocks & the other scraps ta make a quilt for that child. These are just picts of the pieces so you can see how they go tagether. The first 3 picts are of blocks already made. This one is already trimmed down. These 2 are not. Here is my center piece. Cut 2 squares the same size as the center then cut 'em on the diagonal. Find the center of the center piece & of the triangle & line 'em up. Here the 4 triangles are laid by the center piece. As you can see, even discounting the seam allowance, they will be too big. You will need ta trim down. Here are some other pieces. |
Too cute! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting... looks like a great method to prevent the triangles from being too small, which happens to me toooooo often!
|
Thank you, I'm going to give that a try!! :-)

Cute blocks !

so, I am guessing as the SIS grows you just keep making the 2 squares for the next row of triangles the same size and then just cut on one diagonal........
|
I've tried this b4, but wound up with lopsided squares. DUH, the key as you showed so well is squaring each one!
|
Good for you for showing this, DublB
A picture is worth a 1000 words!

As QuiltE said be sure ta leave the 1/4" seam allowance when ya trim it up. |
Thanks for the useful tip!

I love doing these! But i have an easier way of doing them....start with 2 fabrics facing each other and sew all around it then draw an x on one side and clip in the middle so u can get scissor thru to cut on diagonial line (x) press open and get another square which will be equal size of new block and do it same way as u started, squares will get larger til u want it to a certain size block. No triangles to deal with. But your idea is so pretty too!

I always get nervous when I make these. This is good training. Thanks for the tut. Now I'm going to go home and try it.
