In my first tute on the still life floral, we covered the basics of making the flowers and putting it altogether. On this second part of the tute, we will focus on the flower arranging aspect. We will show how to change this mini into a more dramatic and formal arrangement using the same fdn. piece, same vase but fewer of the same flowers. We are going to use the same vase because of the peace it brings to the still life.

Any time you have lots of prints together in a quilt , it helps to add either a plaid or stripe. This calms the senses and gives the eye a place to rest from all the mumbo-jumbo of the prints. Can you see how the plaid works so well here?

The next thing we will do is to establish our parameters since it will not be a sporadic arrangement as in the first mini, but a formal, more organized arrangement. Let's start by adding a flower to the right side of the vase and one on the left.

Next we will add a flower to the top of the mini to establish a heigth. We will try and keep the flowers within these three areas, but extend it a little so as to show fullness to the arrangement.

Now we are going to fill in the middle areas and trying to pay attn to the angles the flowers are facing so we have flowers that are facing in all directions just like in real life.

Here we have all 7 flowers we are using today filled in within the parameters we chose.

In the previous pic, noticed how I placed the big yellow flower on the left so it is facing outward to the left. By the way, this is a gorgeous looking flower that could have been used as a cntrpc because of its size, color, and depth of angles.

In the next pic, we are adding leaves by starting at the top and working downward.

Here in this next pic are more leaves added. The vase and all lvs were fussy cut. No pattern needed. Just do anything you want here and have fun with it.

Be sure and keep angles of the lvs in a pleasing format so as to create order. Add as many as you like wherever. Orange or red lvs would not have worked here because of clashing w/the fnd. pc. Keep this in mind when selecting your colors.

All leaves are now filled in.

Next we added a bow. It's great to see something in 3-D in quilts from time to time and a mini is a great place to start!

Here is the same arrangement only done with a different color leaf.

Now we are going to check for contrast on the first mini we did today. This is something I never do, but only showed you how in the first tute for your benefit to help you see where you needed more or less contrast.

Now we'll check contrast on the 2nd mini with the dk. blue lvs.

n2scraplvr 11-12-2009 11:28 AM

Oops, sorry about that. Just got those two pics reversed, but you'll be able to figure which is which. As you can see, the arrangements both look pretty good, but by using the contrast feature of the computer with your camera, you can see which is the best looking route to go. The first arrangement is far better because of the liteness of the turq. lvs. and contrast of it all. See how color can change the total look of that arrangement? Those navy lvs. look sharp and provide drama to this little mini.

Next I want to show you a pic from the first tute. It's an enlargement of a flower that has a "heart" in the center!! That's right! It magically appeared in my quilt because of my love for flowers. Isn't that neat? Just seems to happen for me magically. By the way, I never would have noticed it had I not done a pic of a contrast study for you!! So glad I did that and will use this feature from now on.

By the way, I just absolutely love that great big flower anyway because of the black ruffled edge I put on it. Have never seen a flower like that b4 but am sure there must be one out there in somewhere land. I'm sure the Lord will show it to me one day! This is the fun of creating flowers with fabric - you just never know what you'll make! Hope you enjoyed this tute and keep checking back for more tutes. Good luck with your newly learned "still life floral mini!"

Thank you, LogCabinLady! Part 1 is on the same pg., 1/2 way down, entitled "Still Life Floral Mini". Sorry I wasn't more explicit, but didn't know I wd be doing a Part 2. Just had too much to cover in one tutorial. Hope you enjoy Part 1 also and look forward to seeing your post one day on a still life floral!!

It is so beautiful I will give it a try. Thanks for the quick reply.

Another question I guess I missed somewhere. How are the flowers made? I guess I am dense.

You'll see that when you look at Part I of the tute! They are lots of fun to make! Let me know if you have any more ??. Basically, I put 4 or 5 petals tog to make a flower then cut it into a hexagon shape - I like the hexagon shape or you can take your rotary cutter and put the wave blade on and do a curvy sided flower - it's your painting - do what you want! haha.
