Thanks to everyone who wants to try this. please let me know how you make out.

My foot was NOT included in my accessories when I purchased the machine, it was a separate purchase.

Mine was a separate purchase also Deb, it didn't come with my Memory Craft 9000. Thankfully, Janome feet aren't that expensive, I think I paid less than $15 for it.

I looked at the Janome G foot, and it is not the same as my SID foot. Yes, it does have the little metal 'tongue' but the SID has the metal 'tongue' guide much longer. I forget what the G foot is for, but in my book it isn't called SID.

The one I posted a picture of before is actually called a Blind Hem foot.

I searched Janome.com for "stitch in the ditch foot" and "G foot". It looks similar to the G foot, but doesn't have one side longer than the other. Hmm, I wonder if I've been using the wrong foot for STID and maybe that's why I don't like it? :?:

I just purchased the stitch in the ditch foot this past week and it is different the the G foot. Paid 24.98 - don't know if that is the going price at other dealers or not.

Boxer mom 03-24-2010 08:13 PM

I did not know you could buy a foot for SID. I will have to go look tomorrow.

Hi,
I've used this technique for flying geese also. But I add 1 step to it. When placing the square on the rectangle, I sew a second seam. Then when I trim off the unused corners, my seam is already sewn, and I have a half square triangle that I can use for something else. I don't think it adds more than a few seconds to the process of making the goose block.

That looks like the "G" foot that came with my Brother CS-6000i, which the manual for the machine calls an overcasting foot. (I'm a newbie at both quilting and general sewing.)

Wow, thank you thank you thank you nice tip

quilter05 03-27-2010 08:20 PM

I loved the close up pictures. I just joined this board. What is the stitch in the ditch foot? Is it the blind hem foot? I have a Bernina and that is a #5?

No it itsn't the blind hem foot.....the metal 'tongue' on SID is much longer and the foot itself has even 'feet' while the hem foot has one longer.

I also have a Bernina, a 1090. I believe what you're looking for is the the #10 Edge Joining/Stitch in the Ditch foot. I just found one at sewingmachinesplus.com for $19.95 plus shipping.

There are some on ebay for the same price, only free shipping - but I'd rather deal with this company as I know it'll be a genuine Bernina foot and not a knock off.

Best of luck to you,

Karla

Hi Deb,

Thanks so much for bringing this tip to our attention! I'd forgotten all about it, so ordered myself a Bernina #10 Edge Joining/Stitch in the Ditch foot before I forget again.

Practice, practice, practice. The dishes will still be there, the dust will accumulate next week as well, and everyone should know how to do laundry.......sewing/quilting/fabric shopping is THERAPY....

craftybear 05-16-2010 08:20 PM

thanks for the tip

JEM65 05-31-2010 02:25 PM

What a great idea! I love that I won't have to mark the diagonal line with a pencil on my fabric!

Deb, my machine doesn't have that metal extention so it must only work for particular machines, right?

Nolee 12-11-2010 01:40 AM

My mistake. I didn't read the previous messages. I have a Bernina Aurora 430 and both #5 and #10 feet; however, they are both identical, one foot is not longer on either and the metal bar in the middle is exactly the same on each. The only differene is that the #5 has a grove on the bottom of the foot. What am I not getting?

It is a special foot that you need to purchase. It is specifically called "Stitch in the Ditch" foot.

Nanamoms 12-28-2010 10:23 PM

What a great tip!! I haven't used that foot yet and I have terrible trouble sewing a straight seam!

Lilrain 12-28-2010 10:38 PM

wow, I love that tutorial. I use mine for machine sewing down bindings. I just set the needle a little to the right and let that little lip ride right along the edge of the binding, and it is perfect!

plainpat 12-29-2010 02:53 AM

Thanks so much! That's a great tute & going to find my SID foot to try it.

On 2nd thought, I'll have to look & see if I have that foot.Might have been thinking of a foot with blade on the side...Boo Hoo

On the edge of the mark....toward the center or toward the edge of the fabric?

?

Yes, I used to feel that way as well and my top points always seemed to be a bit 'wonky' (I picked that term up from Sulabug), even when using pencil to mark. Just could not seem to get them straight. For some reason, that little extension keeps me right on the diagonal. I also have learned (as have many others), that the second square must be absolutely on the edge as even a little bit will make a huge difference in the top point.

nativetexan 12-29-2010 08:05 AM

yep, i use my 1/4 inch foot that way. don't have a SID foot. thanks.

cassiemae 01-01-2011 10:14 AM

Thanks for the info I am certainly going to try on a practice piece so when I do a quilt using flying geese I will know what I am doing. Thanks again

I have Janome machines also, it's the G foot.

i also use it to butt up warm and natural batting, both pieces come together on each side of the center bar, zig zag..so i can sew them together , to make them bigger..no waste here!

*Janome makes low and high shank machines..make sure you know what yours is, before you buy your foot..so you don't have to take it back.

cool never thought of that
