just wondering why you would paper piece these strips. I thought it was more for things with points to get them more accurate

Isn't that messy? The ink would rub off. Smudge the fabric.

Not a silly question in my book. I too am asking about all this paper business. Why is it necessary, what is the purpose of it. Thanks.

It's been posted before, but here it is again: the paper acts as a stablizer while sewing odd-shaped and bias cut pieces, and lets you create a very straight strip, which is impossible without the paper. Leave the paper on unitl you sew the strip to something else, then rip the paper off. Use tiny machine stitches which makes it easier to rip the paper.

This was a block I made from my first attempt and I got so addicted that I have made the first row of a Project Linus quilt this evening, should have it finished this weekend, this it a fantastic tip :thumbup:

Yea me, I was telling my boss about this because I noticed that he had many boxes of this paper 3" wide and he gave me a whole box of rolls. Only problem, don't think I have enough scraps. Oh well, fabric shop here I come. I love this whole idea of using the paper. Wonky quilt, here I come. Thanks for the tute. Love it.

Needless to say I have even more scraps now so I might keep this method for making fun Borders.

I like it sort of wonky rather than each piece cut exactly the same and sewn straight..but you can do either
I start with my paper in a box or in the pic you can see I use the thread holder...anything to keep it from rolling all over.
I cut my scraps anywhere from about 1" wide to 1 1/2" wide and about 3 1/2" long.
First you lay one piece right side up on the end of your paper...lay the next strip face down on that and sew as shown using 1/4" seam allowance.. Flip it back and finger press and then lay the next piece face down on that and repeat...I like to sew them at a little angle here and there to make them
"wonky".....continue on as long as you like but I find normally I stopped at
about 1 yard of the piecing and trimmed it as shown and then rolled it up and
continued on...make sense?

THANK YOU Sue Fish as I have found a completely new use for my scraps, on Friday I made a 9 yard designer Jelly Roll, made a Project Linus quilt and now all my Patchwork class Ladies are going to do a Piano key border on the Split 9 patch quilts they are making, so they thank you too. :thumbup:
