This is such a good reminder to do something with all of my small scraps...that I have no plans for...think I may just sew some together today. I collected a few of those reg paper rolls.

jcrilley 07-22-2012 03:21 AM

I used this method for the border of my "Scrappy-and I like it!" post.

I have seen this idea before, but not the quilt ideas. Sue Fish, your quilts are wonderful.
Lacelady, your roll holder is upcycle super. Scrappy quilts make me smile.

SueDor 07-23-2012 01:50 AM

I love your idea and all of the scrappy quilts!

Thanks. Thinking of getting back to more using this method

ribbbbons 07-28-2012 08:15 PM

how to get paper off

After you sew the paper strip onto your quilt, use a spray bottle of water to spritz it and the paper will practically fall off. I do this for all my paper piecing. This is an excellent tutorial.

Thanks. Often that exactly what a quilt needs

Journi 03-01-2013 08:08 AM

What kind paper are you using on your roll?

I'd like to see a picture(s) of a completed quilt(s) using this method for ideas. Looks like fun and interesting way to use scraps. Thanks

Search "Scrappy and I like it!" post here on the quilting board. I used this method on the borders of that quilt.

Would hand sewing the pieces on the paper work as well as machine sewing? This would be something to do while watching tv.

I don't think that's a good idea as you have to tear the paper off & your hand stitches might not be tight enough, and would get pulled out or stretched.

Noiseynana 03-03-2013 03:36 AM

Great idea but doesn't sewing thru paper dull the needle?

Elfi2 03-03-2013 06:33 AM

Great idea!!! Sure will turn out nice used in a quilt but I just wondered where you get the paper...??? :)

twinkie 03-03-2013 07:59 AM

That is soooooo cool. Thanks for the idea

I like it sort of wonky rather than each piece cut exactly the same and sewn straight..but you can do either
I start with my paper in a box or in the pic you can see I use the thread holder...anything to keep it from rolling all over.
I cut my scraps anywhere from about 1" wide to 1 1/2" wide and about 3 1/2" long.
First you lay one piece right side up on the end of your paper...lay the next strip face down on that and sew as shown using 1/4" seam allowance.. Flip it back and finger press and then lay the next piece face down on that and repeat...I like to sew them at a little angle here and there to make them "wonky".....continue on as long as you like but I find normally I stopped at about 1 yard of the piecing and trimmed it as shown and then rolled it up and continued on...make sense?

I do nearly all my quilt borders this way, using a till roll. I use a small machine stitch and always start and finish each scrap with a fastening stitch to make sure it is secure when I remove the paper. I measure out the length I need and then stitch until it is all covered, making sure a little of the fabric overlaps the edges. It looks particularly good if you angle some of the strips. I give it a good press and then rotary cut along both long edges to trim to size. It's an excellent way to produce really straight borders that don't curve! (A word of warning - don't use thermal till rolls - they turn black when you press them!)

Not any more than paper piecing does. Frankly, I don't notice a difference of the needle dulling any faster when I PP verses regular sewing.

My quilt guild is saving small pieces to stuff dog beds for shelters. One of the quilts I am working on has a braid that I seem to be allowing it to get out of hand. I have tried the disappearing 9 patch with it as well. After getting into applique, it seems to be about lots of scraps and I have gotten worse about not throwing anything away! I must find a happy medium!

NOELLA 03-28-2013 06:36 AM

Love the idea, I guess i'll have to start stripping on the machine tape I have . got it when I worked at a bank adding machine tape was no longer needed so I was given some. ( that was years ago) turned yellow but that dosn.t matter
always hae little scraps don't know what to do with guess I know now, will start soon.

I think the "older" paper is easier to tear off. I have some old stationary from a business that a friend gave me that I use. It's just "brittle" enough to tear off real easy.

Happy Easter to you too!

I do this all the time. It is great for when you have a few minutes to sew and many scraps. Then when you need it There it is ready to use. Tadah ! Hugs

Lol that how I had ended up with miles of it! Little at a time and before you know it ... You have Lots

LadyGem2008 07-12-2013 12:02 PM

This is so cool. Even I could use up my bits and pieces instead of giving them away. Thank you for showing us this one. So very cool!

homecaregiver 07-13-2013 03:59 AM

This is a wonderful tutorial and I copied and pasted & printed it off. I have lots of scraps that I can use and a supply of the paper rolls. Off to sew. Thanks for sharing your tute with us.

Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville is a big time promoter of this idea. I have made them and I just use very tiny stitch so easy to rip off paper. Some of the copy stores will take your old phone books and cut off the bound edge and then cut page to your size and it doesn't cost much at all, a couple of dollars.

chergram 07-25-2013 08:33 AM

amandasgramma 08-28-2013 06:29 AM

carolsews2 01-02-2015 08:36 PM

I can't find the tutorial on string piecing. Can someone direct me on how to find it? Carol
OK, I finally went far enough and found it at the end! Love this idea.

sewellie 01-02-2015 08:55 PM

Where do u find 3" adding machine tape without going to an office supply place that charges an arm & leg?
