Okay, so I went to the Workday at the Post and we worked on two different samples, with the two methods and found out that one will indeed give you the required quarter square triangle.
The second method will provide you with mirror image quarter square triangles.
So - - the camera didn't do what it was supposed to, so I came home and asked hubby for a new one <g>
The first method, I cut two 6.5" squares of contrasting colors ... draw two diagonals on the lightest square.
Start on the left side of the first diagonal, sew to the center, pivot machine and sew across the center line until you are on the right side of the same line ... sew to the end - - repeat on the second diagonal.

cut apart on the drawn line

This will provide four identical quarter square triangles, then you iron seam to the dark fabric. Cut contrasting (such as yellow) squares at 6.5" (or six - it works <g>)
Match the points to the corners, sew 1/4" then cut apart ...
there! YOu have your blue/orange/yellow blocks
and then my camera quit working!

For mirror image quarter square triangles, cut two contrasting squares, draw ONE diagonal - - sew on both sides of the drawn line, (1/4 inch seam) - - cut apart on the drawn line, iron with the dark behind the seam.
Cut another colored square that matches the size of your HST - - draw a diagonal line on that square, right sides together with the HST ... sew 1/4 inch seam on both sides of the drawn line, cut apart on the drawn line and viola! Two mirror imaged quarter square triangles, and I don't have a clue as to what you use them for, even though they are in that one square as points in a star ... sorry about the camera <wave>

Awesome!! That is okay withthe camera. You may have been to close when taking them. Some won't focus like that. I find I take them further back and then crop them. Great if you get a new camera though. We need another here. Two of the kids have them and since they will probably all be at camp at differnt tiMes and wants to all take pictures.

omak 01-06-2010 08:56 AM

I have been recruited to take pictures of more than two hundred quilts for Operation 1161 - - put them on discs for fund raising sale ... I don't think THIS camera will work, since it wants to stop after TEN pictures ... of course, it could be that the little disc inside needs replaced - - I don't know.
I put hubby to the task last night. He will decide what when and how in the next week or so <g> He is REALLY the shopper in the family.

cutebuns 01-06-2010 10:54 AM

So you either have to get a new one or try to fit 20 quilts in each picture. I say go for the new camera. If it has a small memory card that is all it may have room for. A larger card may help. Some tiMes it can be that the flash can't keep up. After about 40 shots give or take a few we need to wait for the flash to catch back up. If we don't need a flash then we are good to go. It is a larger one with differnt lenses etc. I don't knownall what it can do. I am waiting to see if it can do laundry. There are a lot of ones out there and they are not as expensive as they once were.

omak 01-06-2010 10:58 AM

Understood.
The card in it right now says"64" but, it isn't taking that many pictures.
Actually, until I joined the Quilting Board, I had only used the camera once in about four years! Never saw any reason to own one - - my poor kids have only school pictures to prove they didn't actually HATCH! Time to change my attitude about some things, I guess.
Is this block part of the Farm Theme Swap?

Here is the link to the pictures for January's block of the month

the 64 probably has an MB after it, and now they up up to GB way more memory, some camera can only take so big a memory card though DD#1 can only put a 2 GB in hers, though you can get cards with way more than that now and they are not that much, I have always loved taking pictures and it has sure changed, started out with a little wee thing, graduated to taking them with Dad's bigger camera, it was great as my parents paid for developing and film if I took enough for them and some of what they liked, and then I started getting my own, as you can see by looking at my PDA there is a lot there and there is way more on the computer, it is nothing to have over 100 to download, or two or three hundred to download, I come by it honestly, my parents were on Vancouver Island watching a Softball tournament that one of my nephews was playing in and he came back (mom had the old small lap top with her) and asked her to download the pictures, she asked how many and he said just a few, 1200 pictures later........... you have to love the digital.

Thanks so much for the tute!!! I was having a hard time with one part until I looked at this, then it was "why didn't you do it that way" kind of thing. I spent forever yesturday taking photos for when my daughter gets really into it (she's already starting;0), but yours were more detailed and very helpful. I think next time I just might get permission from the person that did the tutorial to print out their pictures. Thanks again for the help!!!

cutebuns 01-07-2010 08:37 PM

If it is me then feel free to print any and all, especially if it will help,

If you ever need help just ask, there are a bunch that are really good here and are always willing to offer suggestions.

Pattigail 02-14-2010 11:56 AM

I wish I had seen this tutorial before I made the block. I had a heck of a time, but got it completed anyway. I am new to this quilting stuff. :-)

SUSAN 03-19-2010 06:12 AM

LOVE IT!!

SUSAN 03-19-2010 06:14 AM

me too and let me tell ya, I was so proud to get my block done. Took it to my quilting group, (all experienced quilters, unlike me) and as we looked we said 'something is wrong'. Sure enough, I got one part wrong so my sunflower had a flat side. Ended up taking it all apart, re-doing it and finally got it right.

Hi this block is so nice, although I missed doing it as a BOM would it be OK if I incorporated it in a quilt I am making? What size is the block? I really like this block it is so unique.
