(Picture of finished quilt and picture of the color chart I made on graph paper appear at the end of this post.)

I made this quilt from scraps. There is probably an easy strip cutting method to do the Trip Around the World pattern, but I don't know it, and using scraps, it wouldn't have been an option for me anyway. I have included cutting instructions for yardage as well as cutting instructions if you are using scraps.

Finished size of the quilt is 36" by 48" (or thereabout - within an inch or so. I forgot to measure the finished quilt before I gave it as a gift)

Yardage Amounts:

Red Fabric: 3/8 yd. (1/2 yd if you prewash and expect shrinkage, or just to be safe)
Orange Fabric: 1/3 yd.
Yellow: 1/3 yd
Green: 1/3 yd
Blue: 1/3 yd
Purple: 3/8 yd (1/2 yd if you prewash and expect shrinkage, or just to be safe)
Navy Blue: 1/4 yd
Backing: 1 and 1/2 yd.

Backing is brought to the front for binding, so no binding yardage is given.

Cutting (if using yardage):

Orange, yellow, green, blue: cut (2) 4 and 1/2 inch strips, width of fabric. Subcut into (16) 4 and 1/2" squares.

Red: cut (2) 4 and 1/2 inch strips, width of fabric. Subcut into (16) 4 1/2" squares. Cut one more 4 1/2" square for a total of 17 red squares

Purple: Cut (2) 4 and 1/2 inch strips, width of fabric. Subcut into (16) 4 1/2" squares. Cut two more 4 1/2" squares for a total of 18 purple squares

Navy Blue: Cut (2) 2 1/2" by 36" strips

Cutting (If using scraps):

Red: Cut (17) 4 1/2" squares

Orange, yellow, green, blue: Cut (16) 4 1/2" squares

Purple: Cut (18) 4 1/2" squares

Borders: Cut (2) 2 1/2" by 36" strips

Assembly:

Lay colored squares out on the floor according the the color diagram. Starting at one end, assemble each row and press. After rows are assembled, check to be sure all of the colors are where they ought to be, then sew rows together.

Attach Navy Blue end borders.

When you lay out the quilt sandwich to quilt it, leave at least 2 to 3 inches of backing showing on all sides, to ensure adequate fabric for binding.

P.S. - this is the first time I've tried to make the instructions for a design intelligible to anyone but myself, so if it is unclear or you spot any mistakes, please let me know!

Thanks so much! My nephew is expecting twins so I'm sure to find a good use for this.

Finished size: 36" by 48". No you didn't miss it, I just forgot to put it in. But I'll go back and add that now.

Thank you so much. All I am waiting for is to learn the sex of the baby, to do a pink or blue border. :-)
