several have asked for directions on making this tacking stitch. i have heard it called by several names.
when the needle travels from the bottom of the vee to the next position to begin the next stitch it is traveling thru the batting. the only portion of this stitch that shows on the back of the quilt is the right leg of the vee. i have circled it in the first illustration.
any questions just ask.
have fun,
marie

You have done a very nice job at the tutorial - made it very clear. http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/1753.page This is my rendition from a long time ago. It's my favorite stitch, and I have noticed that you make lots that way too, Nanabird. Thanx for sharing.

thanks nanabirdomo,
loved the look of it on your quilt but couldn't see clear enough to figure out how it was done.
I would think it's much better than tying, but I've never tyed (is that how you'd spell that) a quilt, I'm a domestic machine quilter, but have a small hand pieced quilt that I want to hand quilt. Maybe I'll turkey track it.
your tute is very clear and through. thank you

Thanks for the posting nanabird - I was just looking for this stitch a few days ago :!:

Thanks for the tutorial. Such a neat idea. Did you use emboidery floss. How many strands?

SaraSewing 09-29-2009 07:36 PM

My favorite medium to use is knit crocheine. It comes in lots of nice colors and pretty sturdy to use and wears well.

nanabirdmo 09-30-2009 08:00 PM

hi jojo, i actually use light wt crochet thread. i have tried floss but personally did not care for it. one ply wasn't enough and more just get tangled for me. the illustration actually shows a type of pearl cotton. it is a little heavier than the crochet thread but the color shows great. i would just encourage you to experiment and decide what you like to work with and the look you want to achieve. no quilt police here.

hi earthwalker, thanks, or should i say "Aww shucks!"

I have used this way of 'tying' for a number of quilts since I learned this here. I love it, it looks great and is so durable. Thank you so much for teaching us this technique.

katmom54 06-12-2010 10:45 AM

how far apart do you place them?

SaraSewing 06-12-2010 01:07 PM

go with the design preferably. Or about 2"

mayday 07-03-2010 04:45 AM

Have read and tried AND you say every two inches sew------if I were to adopt this for a pieced quilt made up of 4 " squares has anyone any suggestion in what "pattern" I should sew------I thought left to right diagonally one row then reverse------any other ideas plse?

kwhite 07-03-2010 04:54 AM

Looks like a technique to experimet with on my doll quilt this month. Thanks
