some days ago, I had posted some picts ot 'lil twister variations.... so here is a small tutorial for the 2 colored variation by using the tool for 3 1/2 inches.

Step 1, make 4 patches, size 5 by 5 inch sq.

Step 2, add squares into rows, sew together

Step 3, add borders ( cut 3 inches)

Step 4, the cloth will look like this

Step 5, sew twister pieces in right order together

never knew how this was done, thanks

katkat1946 06-07-2011 04:38 AM

Thanks so much for doing this. I do have a question, however. When you say to sew the lil twister blocks in the right order, how do I know what the right order is? I do see that the ones with white need to go on the outside but is there also a rieght order to the inside ones as well? It probably should be obvious but I missed it. Thanks again.

The right order is the order in which you cut them. I found it easiest to cut one row across, stack them in order and sew them together, then go on to the second row. After you sew a few you will begin to see how they should go but it is pretty easy to get confused if you cut too many or get them out of order.

Thanks. I had done three twisters but it is the layout (like you shared with us) that is really helpful.

nab 06-07-2011 06:17 AM

I would love to see the finished top. Where do you get a pattern? I guess I missed out on the posts for twisters. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to look into this.

GramaLaura 06-07-2011 06:20 AM

So that's how it's done! Thank you for showing us :D

kathymarie 06-07-2011 06:56 AM

jaciqltznok 06-07-2011 07:05 AM

you can go to the "search" section and type in lil' twister..you will be flooded with responses to look at and read!

there is a also a pattern(link) to doing this without the template and with NO wasted fabric pieces. wish I could find that again!

nab 06-07-2011 07:26 AM

Thanks Jacquie, I'll do that.

JanieH 06-07-2011 02:11 PM

This pattern looks like a tessalating quilt I made a while back. Here is a pic without the "borders" on. I found these fabrics already cut out with the magazine they came from at a rummage sale for 50 cents. They are all older fabrics (80's and 90's) I believe. I do have the top done but not quilted if you would like to see a pic...I will post it tomorrow.

I do these windmills without the twister tool - no waste, no tools to buy and very quick.

The tutorial link above is a good one for the no-tool method, but the concept is easy to grasp to do them in any size your squares are.

I have to say that I don't see the point of buying a special square and wasting half the fabric when it's easier and more economical to cut the blades by hand!

I agree with you, maggiem, the template that came with the above quilt pic was a blade...no waste there.

Thanks for thinking of us across the pond. I am going to try this.

Jaciqltzok: Thanks for in information.

Matilda 06-09-2011 04:05 AM

Very pretty. I look forward to seeing a picture with it all done.

nab 06-09-2011 04:38 AM

I ordered my twisters. I should get them on Monday. I think I will start putting my squares together so they are ready. Thanks to all for the info and new adventure.

That's a neat block. Looks difficult but the instructions makes it doable. Thank both ladies for the tutes.

welshgirl 11-27-2011 01:44 PM

Thanks very much for this different twister layout, it makes a nice change from all the Christmas ones. Good work

Cuddly Quilter 01-27-2012 06:00 AM

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. We can NEVER have toooooo many variations. I like your colour designs. Would be interesting to see the finished quilt as i cannot picture it from the 5" blocks.
