Using Creative Grid templates to make a Double Wedding Ring quilt

I bought the Downton Abbey DWR kit from Craftsy, but wanted to use my Creative Grid (CG) templates to cut out the pieces. The CG template set does not include templates to cut the individual segments that make up a pieced arc. This is how I adapted the Craftsy pattern to use the CG templates.

First I drew off the CG arc shape, and resized the Craftsy pattern segments to fit within it.

Using the adjusted paper segment patterns, I made templates from plastic, adding a 1/4" seam allowance to each side.

From bits of the selvedge edges, I made a swatch chart to go by in cutting pieces.

After cutting the first segment from a 2-1/2" strip then turning the template upside down, each additional segment required only one cut.

For me, laying out the segments in order to sew was easier than separating individual pieces from stacks as I sewed.

A bunch of stitched segments, ready to press:

I used the CG arc to trim my segment assemblies.

And ended up with perfect arcs, without having to sew them perfectly. I think with dozens of arcs to sew, this was a huge advantage.

Good Luck. I didn't like sewing the arcs.

Thank you! I did want to try this but was not entirely clear when you first posted your quilt. I am going to make this for my bed after the first of the year.

Thanks for the great tutorial!

This is a keeper...thanks!!!!!!! The other sections of DWR came with kit or CG?

Well done. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome, y'all! I actually took the photos to use as reference for my next DWR. At 76, I need all the memory helps I can get!

Geri B - Yes, the Creative Grids set has all the other templates. I think the reason it doesn't include individual arc segment templates is that the arcs are paper pieced in Judy's quilts. But for accuracy in stitching the DWR, you only need the arcs to be perfectly shaped, not necessarily perfectly pieced. (I know, who am I to question the methods of someone as talented and successful as Judy Niemeyer?!)

Sorry, my previous post left out a couple of words. It should have said, "But for accuracy in stitching the DWR, you only need the arcs to be perfectly sized and shaped, not necessarily perfectly pieced."

Outstanding! Thank you for all of your work in making the tutorial. Your quilt will be a work of art for sure.

I would like to give this method a try by just making a table topper rather than a whole quilt as it might never get finished.

This looks like a fun project. I always liked that quilt but didn't ever think I'd get up the nerve to try one for myself. But with your help I think I can do this. I love love love the fabric colours you picked. Thank you for helping with this.
