Using Striped Fabrics to make a Basket Weave Quilt.
I have been asked about my recent quilt tops: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...e-t292865.html and https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...s-t292851.html I will explain how I have done these. I used my Electric Quilt, but it is not necessary to have it. I did not take a picture of the full fabric before starting. We will pretend that these laid out scraps represent the full fabric. Find the repeats and make cut strips at the same location of each repeat. It does not really matter where you start as long as it is the same location on each. If your fabric is wavy or curves, a pair of sharp scissors may be a better tool to use. Measure the repeat width of each strip. All strips should be the same width. Whatever that measurement is, sub-cut the strips to that size so that the blocks are squares. Now arrange and sew these square blocks into larger blocks of 4. Be sure to arrange the stripes in the right directions. When these are complete, arrange your blocks into the size of quilt top you desire. I had only a small piece of this donated fabric and a full basket weave arranged to only 25" square. This picture is from my EQ7. To make these blocks into a rectangular lap quilt for the cancer center, I had to make the horizontal and vertical borders/sashing different widths. This is perfectly fine. It's your quilt and you can design it quite easily yourself. Have fun. |
Thanks for the explanation/tutorial. That really makes sense.

Wow! That would certainly work up quickly for charity quilts. I have a bunch of dismembered striped shirts. I thing this block would be great for them. Thank you.

Wonderful tutorial...thank you for sharing.

I wondered how you did your quilt. Love this! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Nan! I never know what to do with stripes. Great tutorial.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I have a fear of using stripes. Yours look great.

Thanks for a very clear tutorial!

Very nice tutorial. I always try to cut striped fabric with scissors. I also try to avoid buying stripes. This quilt is perfect with them.
