So the kite that I just did for the Jane and other blocks coming up are using a y seam,so here is one that we will be seeing, this is how I do it, but there are also different ways.

For this I marked my seam allowance, and for practice it may be a good idea so you know where to start and stop.

so I first matched my hexagons and did a little sewing on the line making sure that I didn't go into the seam allowance, take a couple of extra stitched in the same spot right on the corner to reinforce it a little so when you pull on it it won't come apart, you can go over a stitch or two but don't leave it short or the odds are that you will have a hole when you are done, Press your seams open.

match the first part of the seam only and leaving the seam allowance again and doing that little tack, sew until you hit the crossroads or other seam allowance, and you want your needle to stop exactly in the right place to turn, Sing the bottom piece, line them up and sew the remaining to the next seam allowance (sorry didn't get a picture of that part) yet again tacking at the end.

Press your seams open, if you don't, the seam allowance gets in the way of the seams, so that is important!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, just because I had the square on top doesn't mean that you have to, feel free to flip it over and then you will stop in the seam, it depends on what mood I am in to how I do it.

As well if you are having a hard time once you get to the junction, feel free to pull it off there and go from the other side, in this I found that I was doing more than one y and usually you can do the same but start in the middle, these are so small that may be difficult,

So I flipped it over to show you the other side,

line it up, sew the seam and stopping right at that seam ending, (needle down)

you turn the top until you match it with the bottom piece and continue on,

And so it will look something like this,

And press the seams open and so now see what we have!

If you draw your lines on, remember that they are a little in from the edge of the ruler especially depending on what you are drawing with so take that into account for accuracy, it isn't so bad with big pieces but with the small ones it makes a much bigger difference,

Thanks for the tute cutibuns. I have sewn the Y seam by hand but never by machine. This just might be one that I sew by hand. I've never done reverse applique either. I have heard it is easy, just hope so.

You can also do a combination of hand sewing and machine on it though as well, it will be interesting how everyone deals with it, though for those that never have done a Y seam, it is the same basically when doing it by hand as well, though easier to see when it is in your hand, especially when dealing with such small seams,

Plus, my hands don't run away with me like my machine does sometimes! :mrgreen:

this is true, for those that have the speed control you can slow your machine right down, it is also some times easier to get the needle to go through exactly where you need it. that is very important for to get a point there.

I have a hexagon WIP that I've been doing for over a year, it's all handpiecing and I tend to work on it when I want to sew but don't really want to think or concentrate, just handsew. So I've done millions (maybe not quite millions, but definitely lots) of Y seams! I didn't even realise.

And now that you've said that, I can "see" in my mind exactly how it goes. I was having trouble getting my head around it, but now it's crystal clear.

Funny how something that's obvious can be the difference! LOL
