In our quild class we made place mats, using the same idea. I believe we used 10" sq. And a 2 1/2" borders. Sandwich batting in between the back and front, turn inside out, stitch in the ditch, and top stitch 1/4" around the sides. we many soooo... Many of these... Great Christmas gifts to make ...

Left out an important note..on the 10" sq. Mark 3" out from each corner, then make a cut from side to side to get a perfect octagon.
Thankyou so much for the great tut.

Thanks for the great tutorial, I just had to bookmark it, I am doing a gmf by hand (miniature) but this tutorial gave me the idea to make a full size one by machine (sometime in this life time I hope).
