Posting this for Sewnsewer :) Please note that the pictures are numbered in succession, however, they may not be in order due to the way the board loads them so some got out of order. If you have any questions, see the image name such as image 1 or image 2 under the image for the correct succession. Oh, one more thing! I didn't have enough coffee this morning so I left 2 out of my numbering system in my head. So, yes, there is no #2 image because I can't count when I renamed the pictures, not because image 2 was left out. I guess I count 1,3,4,5,6 etc. 2 must be one of those optional numbers :)...

If you have any trouble following the sequence of the pics since a few loaded out of order, please PM Sewnsewer for clarification.

PLEASE DO NOT POST THESE INSTRUCTIONS ON OTHER WEBSITES. Thank you.

"EMILY’S PURSE" INSTRUCTIONS (I named this pattern Emily's purse, because I designed it for my DIL)

Size 9-1/2" X 13"

Straps 21 inches long

Materials: 1 magnetic snap,

scrap fabric, scrap batting

water soluble pen or other non permanent marking tool

(2) 1 X 23 inch strips of ultra firm stabilizer (for handles)

Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

(4) 3/8” metal grommets and grommet setter tool

9” round plate (for tracing a circle)

(1) 7” zipper to match lining fabric

Zipper foot

pliers

48" of cording

PURSE INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut 10 strips 2-1/2" wide X 15" long from outside purse fabric. Sew together with 1/4" seam, alternating the fabrics. Iron smooth with seams going the same direction. Square up to measure 10-1/2" X 14".

Cut a circle from 1 piece of outside purse fabric and batting, for the bottom of the purse.

Stitch front and back of purse pieces at the sides, RST with the stripes going horozonally using a 1/4" seam allowance.

Pin bottom and batting together and pin to purse piece. Stitch bottom RST using a 3/8" inch seam allowance.

Turn right side out and set aside.

PURSE HANDLES:

Cut handles 4" wide X 23" long. Fold in half length wise and crease with iron. Unfold and fold both sides to center and crease again, then fold in half and crease again.

Next, cut a piece of ultra firm stabilizer 7/8" wide X 23" long and place on inside of one half of strip.

Fold over and stitch closed. Turn and stitch the other side. Do this for both handle pieces.

LINING INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut 2 pieces of lining fabric 8-1/2" X 14".

Cut 2 strips of fabric 2-1/2" wide X 14” long from one of the fabrics you use for the outside of the purse. This will be the top portion of the inside lining. Stitch to the top with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Sew 1 of the 2-1/2" X 14" strips to each lining piece.

Cut (2) 10-3/8" X 14" pieces of batting for the lining pieces. Set the batting pieces aside for right now.

2 FRONT INSIDE POCKETS:

Cut 1 piece of lining fabric 8-3/4" wide X ll" long for the front inside pockets. Cut 1 piece of batting 5" X 8".

Fold the fabric in half and crease. Place the 5" X 8" piece of batting on lining fabric, lining it up with the crease and centered. Fold fabric over and mark center with a line using a water soluable pen.

Pin pocket to 1 lining piece 3-1/2" inches down from the top (the red fabric is my top) and then place on batting piece. Tuck under 1/4" on the bottom and sides and pin. Stitch center seam first, then the sides and bottom with 2 rows of stitching, or use a double needle.

Using the plate again, cut 1 piece of lining fabric and 1 piece of batting in a circle and set aside.

ZIPPERED INSIDE POCKET:

Cut a piece of the lining fabric for inside zippered pocket 9” wide X 12 long. Fold in half and crease with iron.

Make a mark 1/2" down from where the crease is and draw a rectangle 1/2" wide X 7" long. Place this piece on the BACK SIDE of the other lining piece, centered, with the fold even with where the two fabrics were stitched together. Now pin in place and stitch around the rectangle you just drew. DO NOT STITCH THE CENTER! Now draw a line in the center and a "V" at the ends like the picture below. Cut only on the center line you just drew. (I use a razor blade, or you could use an exacto knife)

Fold back where you cut, and crease with an iron on the back side of the fabric..

Now turn it over and place the zipper face up under the hole and pin in place and stitch the zipper in place.

Next, after you have stitched your zipper in place, turn that piece back over to the back, and fold down the small piece of fabric and stitch all around it with a double seam.

It should look like the picture below afterwards. (this is the right side of the fabric)

Stitch the lining pieces together at the sides only, RST with the top even.

Fold the fabric (in the pic, the red part) over 1/2" towards the inside, overlapping the batting. Trim the batting if you need to, but be careful not to cut the fabric.

**Follow directions on magnetic snap package**, or here is how it is done.

Mark the center of the bag at the top right side showing for snap placement, and 1-1/4 down from top. This will be the center of your snap. Mark your holes with the flat piece of the snap and being very careful, cut a tiny slit. Mark and cut one side at a time.

Cut a 1" X 1" piece of ultrafirm and place flat snap piece on it, and mark where to cut the holes. Next, insert the snap into the holes in the lining piece from the right side of the fabric. Then place the flat piece on and then the 1" X 1" piece of the ultrafirm and use your pliers to bend the prongs outward. This extra piece adds stability, and it covers the flat piece because it is a little sharp around the edges.

GROMET AND HANDLE PLACEMENT:

Measure from the side seams inward (towards the center) 1-1/2" and put a dot there or a pin for the gromet placement. Then measure inward again 3-1/2" for the handle placement

the red circle is the gromet placement mark, and the blue is the handle placement.

Measure the handles upwards from end 1" and pin.

Place lining of purse inside of outer fabric with wrong sides together and pin. Place handles on purse where you made your 3-1/2 inch mark with the center of the handle where the pin is. Your pin should be even with the top. Do this for both handles. Now, stitch the layers together all the way around the opening of the purse with a double seam.

Now, place gromet at your 1-1/2 marking, following directions on package. Cut your 48" piece of cording in half and insert into gromets and tie. You now have a beautiful new purse!
