The Featherweight shop is awesome. They are helpful, quick, a good value and have given so much free information that i use to fix Featherweights. And free shipping.

Congratulation, you got a bargain. I love my featherweight, I take her out and clean her, polish her up and put her back in the box. I do not sew on it. I am thinking of selling it to someone that might actually use it. If I found one for 50, I would surely jump on that deal! I think they are so cute!! My case had a real funky smell too, but aired out in the barn for awhile and is ok now.

I hope you know your repairman. I took my FW to a Singer rep who was supposed to love working on them, a specialist. Couldn't believe that he took the bobbin area apart and returned it to me in pieces, said I needed to spend $89 on a new part. Took it to a guy who used to be on this board and he repaired it for $15. I always use BBQ briquettes in a bag to remove odors, works every time.

I have a 1947 Singer Featherweight, too. It's wonderful!! Also have a Husqvarna Viking. I use the Featherweight most of the time (almost every day). Have a group of friends that I am teaching to make stuffed animals - most have never used a sewing machine. They're learning on my Featherweight and loving it.

Congratulations, you got a bargain. Wanabee Quiltin is right about know your repairman. Mine wouldn't sew and I took it to my dealer where I've bought at least 5 machines through the years so I wasn't a stranger. He told me to use it for parts and hunt for another one. Went online to Nova Montgomery's site and learned how to take it apart. The problem was a thread wound around the bobbin hook. That was several years ago and she still purrs.

Congrats on your FW! I love all of mine. I have found that placing a dryer sheet or two in the case will remove the musty odors.
