Did a search for "kenmore 60020 belt" and it came up with the following, which is a link to a belt that is 14 1/8".

Thank you for looking for me but it's mighty odd Mark. I am looking for a belt for the 117.740. I also own the 117.841 which this belt is "guaranteed to fit" but I don't think it will. I currently have a 13 3/4" belt on my 841 which I bought from Sew Classic. The belt in the link would be much too big for the 841.

In fact the service manual says for the 840 and 841 models, the part number should be 73008.

However this belt may very well fit the 740. I may have done the same search as you but when I got that result saying this belt would fit the 841, I probably discounted it as probably too small for the 740. Looks like this may be the belt I need after all. At this point I've paid for the belt from my local SC so hopefully it fits. If not, I may resort to taking my machine in or rely on stretch belts.

Thanks to Quiltedsunshine too. I wish I lived in Utah - I'd go to your shop!

I was just going by the alternate part numbers part.

What sizes were the too big and too small ones you got from Sew Classic?

Oh gosh, the whole saga of the sewing machine belts?

It came with a 14 1/4" (measured using the rolling method) but that was too big. I tried a 13 3/4" which I already had but it was too small. I ordered a 14 1/8 nominal size (supposed to be 13 7/8" actual) but the actual rolling measurement size I got was only 13 1/2. Then I ordered a belt specifically for Kenmores, the DP6912 which was supposed to be 14 1/4 (nominal?) but it was too small too. I'm using a stretch belt right now.

Using Jenny's method of measuring using a thin strip of paper to see what size belt is needed, I could use 13 1/2 - 14" but that would be the inside size of the belt right? Not the outside, rolling measurement. This is overly complicated IMHO!

Folks - if you already know what size belt you need, write it down!! And thank your lucky stars. I'll be so happy once this is all settled.

Hey Peeps, I know this is an old thread...but, We had the same problem and hubby fixed it by putting two washers under the motor mounts. Two small thin ones on each side. Viola'. Works great. The belt that he is using is a Universal 196388.
Hope this helps.

I realize this is a very old post of yours here. Can you confirm if the "special order" sewing machine motor belt for your 117.841 fit well? And if so, what was the size belt you ordered and where from? Thank you so much, as I've been on the hunt for quite some time trying to find the right size belt for my Kenmore 117.841 machine.

kenmoregal2 some cabinets have really bad paths for the electric cords. You may want to take a look at those before you loosen the two set screws.

Kenmoregal doesn't post here anymore. I emailed her last year and she is still sewing. She's a generous and kind person. Just private message her and ask her advice.
bkay

edited to add: She loves her Kenmore sewing machines, too.
